Kyle Sandilands Out: ARN Cuts $100m Deal

Kyle Sandilands Sacked by ARN Media Following On-Air Dispute

Kyle Sandilands, a prominent figure in Australian radio, has had his contract with ARN Media terminated following a heated on-air exchange with his long-time co-host, Jackie “O” Henderson, last month. The controversial radio personality confirmed his sacking on Wednesday morning, stating that after a two-week suspension, KIIS FM’s owners had “terminated my contract.” Sandilands vehemently disagrees with the decision, asserting that his legal team had previously advised ARN Media that the termination would be invalid.

ARN Media, in a formal statement, confirmed that notices of termination had been issued to both Sandilands and his production company, Quasar Media. Consequently, the popular “Kyle and Jackie O” show will no longer be broadcast. The fallout stems from a tense on-air incident on February 20th, where Sandilands publicly criticised Henderson, accusing her of being “off with the fairies” and suggesting her fascination with horoscopes and astrology made her “almost unworkable.”

Sandilands Claims He Fulfilled His Obligations

In its statement, ARN Media cited Sandilands’ behaviour during the broadcast as constituting “serious misconduct and a breach of ARN’s services agreement with Quasar Media.” This declaration followed an earlier ASX announcement by the company.

Sandilands, however, presented a different perspective. He alleged that ARN Media suspended him and prevented him from communicating with Henderson or any other member of the show’s team. He expressed his frustration, stating, “Then — and this is the bit that gets me — once they’d made it impossible for the show to go on, they turn around and say, ‘You didn’t fix it. You’re fired!'” Sandilands characterised the on-air disagreement as a minor “blue” that had occurred “a hundred times in 25 years,” accusing ARN Media of exaggerating the situation to “burn the place down.”

Allegations of Contractual Evasion

Sandilands further alleged that ARN Media’s actions were an attempt to extricate themselves from a lucrative $100 million deal signed in 2023. He suggested that the company “saw a chance to get out of the contract… and they ran with it.” He emphasised his consistent delivery of top-tier results, stating, “They knew how I work, they knew the show, and they were happy to pay for it — because I delivered. Number one ratings. Year after year. Hundreds of millions of dollars in revenue for their business. I held up my end. I always have.” Sandilands questioned ARN Media’s decision to breach a contract and face potential legal repercussions rather than honouring it and continuing to benefit from his proven success.

The End of a Long-Standing Partnership

This abrupt termination signals the end of a remarkable two-decade partnership between Sandilands and Henderson. The duo were under contract with ARN Media until at least 2034, with the deal reportedly worth $200 million. Their on-air collaboration spanned over 25 years across Sydney, and in 2024, they expanded their reach to Melbourne.

While the “Kyle and Jackie O” show enjoyed immense success in Sydney, consistently topping ratings and commanding significant market share, its performance in Melbourne did not replicate this triumph. At its peak, the show captivated an audience of 797,000 Sydney listeners each weekday, holding a commanding 16.3 per cent market share, making it the most popular radio program in the city. By the end of last year, their Sydney share had dipped to 12.7 per cent, placing them second in the network rankings. In Melbourne, the show struggled to gain traction, achieving only a 5 per cent market share.

Legal Challenges Loom

Sandilands indicated his intention to pursue legal action, stating, “It’s over to my lawyers.” He concluded his statement with a defiant declaration: “I’m not done. Not by a long way.” The future of the “Kyle and Jackie O” brand and ARN Media’s breakfast radio strategy in Sydney and Melbourne now hangs in the balance.
