Lachie Neale’s Future: Bombshell AFL Prediction Post-Breakdown

AFL Superstar Lachie Neale’s Future in Brisbane Questioned Amidst Personal Turmoil

Speculation is rife about the future of Brisbane Lions’ star midfielder Lachie Neale, with a prominent AFL figure suggesting this season could be his last at the club. The whispers of a potential move back to his home state of Western Australia have intensified following a highly publicised personal upheaval.

Matthew Lloyd, a celebrated former Essendon champion, has publicly predicted that Neale might be heading back to WA by the end of the current season. This forecast comes as the two-time Brownlow Medallist approaches the 2026 season as an unrestricted free agent, with his personal life under a microscope following a significant marital breakdown.

“It sounds like this will be the last year he plays for the Brisbane Lions, to get back to be closer to his family in WA,” Lloyd commented on 3AW, indicating a strong belief in a homecoming for the decorated player.

Neale, 32, stepped down from his co-captaincy role with the Brisbane Lions in January. This decision followed his admission of having “let my family down” amidst allegations of an affair with a family friend. He later issued a public apology, stating, “I have let my family down and I apologise for my actions.”

His estranged wife, Jules, has since relocated to Perth with their two young children. Neale, meanwhile, has settled into an apartment in Brisbane as he prepares to defend the Lions’ premiership title.

Despite the considerable personal challenges surrounding Neale, Lloyd believes the impact on his on-field performance will be negligible. He expressed confidence in Neale’s professionalism, even in the face of what he termed a “massive storm” of public attention.

“He’s a professional. Players are very good at moving on,” Lloyd explained. “There’s been a massive storm around him, but players are very good at being able to [focus on the team]. Neale is going to do his thing. He’s going to get 25 to 30 touches a week.”

However, the AFL legend cautioned that the real test for Neale and the Lions might lie in their early season form.

“It’s more what happens early in the season. Lachie Neale would want them to be winning games early,” Lloyd stated. “Otherwise, we are going to be talking a lot about the distraction.”

Lloyd also lent his support to the decision to relieve Neale of the captaincy, opining, “Taking the captaincy off him was the right move because you lose respect.”

While Lloyd has cast doubt on Neale’s long-term commitment to Queensland, Lions coach Chris Fagan has adopted a more conciliatory stance.

“I hope he stays and plays with us. But if he chooses to move back to Perth because he needs to be close to his children, then he’ll do that with our blessing,” Fagan remarked last month. He added, “We’re not going to hold anyone to ransom. We’ll just go along with the flow on that.”

Adding fuel to the homecoming rumours, West Coast Eagles coach Andrew McQualter has openly stated that his club is “open” to recruiting Neale. The Fremantle Dockers have also been linked with a potential move for the star midfielder.

For the immediate future, the Brisbane Lions remain premiership favourites, with Neale continuing to be a pivotal player in their midfield engine. However, with his contract set to expire and his family now based in Perth, the persistent questions about his future are unlikely to dissipate.

Should Matthew Lloyd’s prediction prove accurate, the 2026 AFL season could indeed signal the concluding chapter of Lachie Neale’s highly successful tenure with the Brisbane Lions. The coming months will undoubtedly be closely watched as Neale navigates both his professional commitments and his personal circumstances, with his next career move hanging in the balance. The AFL landscape is no stranger to player movements driven by personal reasons, and Neale’s situation is shaping up to be one of the most closely followed storylines in the league. The emotional toll of such significant life changes cannot be underestimated, and how Neale manages these pressures will be a testament to his resilience as both a player and an individual.
