Lake Macquarie Kangaroo Hit-and-Run Deaths: Police Probe

Eastern Greys Targeted in Horrific Hit-and-Run Attacks at Lake Macquarie

Wildlife rescuers are in disbelief and outrage following a series of alleged deliberate hit-and-run attacks that claimed the lives of eight eastern grey kangaroos, including a defenceless joey, in the Lake Macquarie region, south of Newcastle. Tyre tracks found mounting the curb near where the kangaroos were discovered have led animal welfare advocates to strongly suspect these killings were not accidental but a calculated act of cruelty.

The grim discovery began on Tuesday morning, when residents reported finding four deceased kangaroos near the Wyee Point Reserve. The following day, the toll tragically rose with another three kangaroos found dead just one street away.

Julie Hunter, a seasoned macropod species expert associated with the wildlife rescue organisation WIRES, was among the first on the scene. Her description of the aftermath paints a stark picture of the devastation. “It was the most utterly disgusting, horrific tragedy,” Ms Hunter stated, her voice heavy with emotion. “It really looks like this is very much a deliberate attempt to take their lives.”

Ms Hunter elaborated on the disturbing evidence. “We suspect a four-wheel drive complete with bull bars on it, has literally gone looking for them,” she explained. “It looks like they’ve mounted the curb to really try and inflict damage to these incredible creatures … this is their land too.” The tyre marks suggest a vehicle veered off the road with the apparent intention of striking the animals.

A Community in Mourning and Anger

The impact of these events has been profound on the local wildlife rescue community. Ms Hunter revealed the deep emotional toll the incident has taken on her team. “We met last night actually to have a bit of a debrief and everyone was crying because it’s senseless to us,” she shared. “It makes our blood boil, and so we’re probably entering the angry phase, to tell you the truth. We just can’t understand how somebody can go out and actively want to cause harm to a living being.”

The Wyee Point Reserve has become a sanctuary for a growing mob of eastern grey kangaroos in recent years. These majestic marsupials have become a familiar sight, often seen gracefully hopping along the local streets. Their presence has even drawn attention from tourists eager to witness them in their natural habitat. However, this influx has also, at times, raised concerns about potential human-wildlife conflict, a concern that now seems dwarfed by the deliberate violence inflicted upon them.

The Tragic Tale of “Paddy”

Amidst the horror, a heartbreaking discovery was made: a tiny joey, weighing a mere 260 grams, was found nestled inside its deceased mother’s pouch. Tragically, the joey succumbed to its injuries and passed away overnight on Wednesday. The joey was discovered on St Patrick’s Day, leading rescuers to affectionately name him “Paddy.”

Before his untimely death, Paddy had shown remarkable resilience. Ms Hunter noted that he seemed to have “the luck of the Irish on his side,” having been given a clean bill of health by a veterinarian despite suffering bumps and bruises to his leg and head. “We can rescue and save these little pinkies sometimes, but they really still need to be in mum’s pouch,” Ms Hunter explained, highlighting the critical importance of maternal care for infant kangaroos. As an infant, Paddy required intensive care, including feeding every two hours, a task that would consume an hour of Ms Hunter’s time each feeding session.

Police Investigation Underway

Lake Macquarie police have confirmed that they are actively investigating the incident as a matter of serious concern. The penalties for aggravated animal cruelty in New South Wales are severe. Individuals found guilty can face up to two years imprisonment and/or fines of up to $22,000. For corporations, the fines escalate to a maximum of $110,000. These penalties are particularly stringent when it can be proven that the act of cruelty was deliberate or reckless.

Authorities are appealing to the public for any information that could assist their investigation. Anyone who may have witnessed the events, possesses CCTV footage, or has dash-cam recordings from the area is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000. The community hopes that by bringing those responsible to justice, they can prevent such senseless acts of violence from happening again.
