Limerick Love: Declan & Louise’s Story

From Teenage Disco to Lifelong Love: The Story of Louise Cantillon and Declan Hannon

For Louise Cantillon, a well-known radio presenter, and Declan Hannon, a decorated Limerick hurling captain, their love story is a testament to enduring romance that began over a decade ago. Their journey from a fateful teenage disco dance to a cherished partnership, culminating in marriage, spans 14 years of shared experiences and unwavering support.

The couple’s relationship, which blossomed from teenage friendship into a deep connection, saw them navigate the early stages of adulthood together. While many of their peers embarked on global adventures after completing college in 2015, Louise and Declan found themselves rooted in Limerick. “We found that we were the only two left in Limerick,” Louise recalled, highlighting their shared decision to build their lives together in their hometown.

The Spark Ignited: First Kiss and Early Days

The initial spark between Louise and Declan ignited when they were just 15 and 16 years old. Their first kiss took place at ‘Insomnia,’ a popular teen night held at Garryowen Rugby Club. Reflecting on this moment, Louise shared, “I’d say it could have been a case of will you meet my mate but we were all young and had the same friends.” While this was their first kiss, it wasn’t an immediate declaration of a relationship. Louise described it as a moment where “maybe there was a seed sown then.”

This seed of affection took root and began to flourish as they navigated the transition from secondary school. Louise explained, “We’ve known each other for years. It was literally an underage disco that we first met at but we didn’t start going out until we were 18, until after we finished our Leaving Cert.” Hailing from the same parish in County Limerick, their shared background undoubtedly contributed to the natural progression of their young love.

First Dates and Growing Together

The summer months following the completion of secondary school are often a significant rite of passage, and for Louise and Declan, this period was filled with cherished memories of their first dates. Louise humorously described their early outings as “real culchie,” recalling a concert at WestFest in Newcastle West.

As they entered their twenties, their relationship deepened, marked by a shared journey of personal growth. Louise reflected on how they’ve “kind of grown up together.” Having known each other since their mid-teens and officially dating from the age of 18, nearly everything they’ve experienced in their twenties has been a shared adventure. “It’s lovely,” she enthused. The couple moved in together four years ago, a significant step that Louise believes profoundly changes a relationship. “When you live with someone it changes everything, doesn’t it? It just becomes that your whole life happens together,” she remarked about their shared home in Limerick.

A Picture-Perfect Proposal

The commitment to a shared future was solidified in December 2021 when Declan, a healthcare recruitment manager, proposed to Louise during a romantic getaway. The picturesque Slea Head beach in Dingle provided the stunning backdrop for the proposal. Louise shared the joyous news on social media with a heartfelt post, accompanied by a picture of the couple kissing and her new ring glinting in the sunrise. The caption, “extra sparkly sunrise ar Chom Dhíneol ar maidin…,” along with a string of sparkle emojis, captured the magic of the moment.

Wedding Bells and a Touch of Unconventionality

While the engagement was met with much excitement, Louise admitted to RSVP Magazine in August 2022 that wedding planning wasn’t her strongest suit. “I’m doing a little bit of wedding planning, I’m not great I must say,” she confessed. Fortunately, her sister, who lives in Dubai, returned home and provided invaluable assistance, easing some of the pressure. At that point, “we have no dates, no nothing yet – but we are going to get married,” she assured.

Fast forward a year, and despite any initial planning hesitations, the couple successfully orchestrated their dream wedding. They exchanged vows at the elegant Adare Manor in September 2023. Louise later shared glimpses of the pre-wedding festivities, looking radiant in a white mini dress and heels, building anticipation for her bridal attire.

Navigating a Unique Marital Setup

In a somewhat unconventional turn, by February 2025, Louise revealed to the Irish Independent that she and Declan were living apart, with Declan based in Limerick and Louise in Dublin. She described their situation as “gas” and noted, “I feel we were more like a married couple before we got married. It’s clearly gone the opposite way.” Louise explained that her weekends are often occupied with work commitments, but this arrangement, while unconventional, makes their time together all the more precious.

Adding to RSVP Magazine in May, Louise elaborated on their unique living situation, stating, “It’s definitely not conventional, but we’ve found our rhythm. We’re very motivated people and we’re still really young…” She acknowledged that the previous year had presented its challenges, but emphasized that without children or a mortgage, they were making it work, with Declan’s unwavering support being a crucial factor.

A New Chapter: Declan’s Retirement and Louise’s Support

October 2025 marked a significant milestone for Declan Hannon as he announced his retirement from Limerick GAA after a distinguished 15-year career. In his heartfelt statement, Declan expressed his immense honour in representing his county and shared the joy of experiencing “the highest of highs with people I love.” He extended a special thank you to his wife, Louise, acknowledging her vital role in “this chapter of our life.”

Declan beautifully articulated Louise’s impact: “Your love, care and huge sacrifice has been instrumental in allowing me to chase my dreams.” This statement underscored the profound mutual support that underpins their enduring relationship, a love story that continues to unfold with grace and strength.
