Luka Doncic Faces Setback Before Game 2 vs. Rockets

Luka Doncic’s Season Comes to an Early End

The Los Angeles Lakers faced a difficult challenge in the final stretch of the regular season without one of their star players, Luka Doncic. The talented guard suffered a Grade 2 left hamstring strain on April 2, which kept him out for the rest of the season and marked the end of another impressive campaign.

Before his injury, Doncic had delivered one of the most dominant offensive seasons in the league. He led the Lakers (53-29) to the fourth seed in the Western Conference. During that time, he averaged 33.5 points per game, making him the league’s top scorer. Additionally, he contributed 7.7 rebounds and 8.3 assists per game, showcasing his all-around impact on the court.

Doncic shot an impressive 47.6% from the field, 36.6% from three-point range, and 78.0% from the free-throw line. His scoring and playmaking abilities placed him at the center of the MVP conversation, especially during the second half of the season.

Unfortunately for Doncic, his stellar performance did not result in a spot among the league’s final three MVP candidates. On Sunday, the NBA announced the finalists for the Most Valuable Player award: Shai Gilgeous-Alexander of the Oklahoma City Thunder, Victor Wembanyama of the San Antonio Spurs, and Nikola Jokic of the Denver Nuggets. Doncic was notably left out of the final group.

This marks the second time that Doncic has led the league in scoring without winning the MVP award. In the 2023-24 season with the Dallas Mavericks, he played 70 games, averaging 33.9 points, 9.2 rebounds, and 9.8 assists per game. However, he finished second in voting behind Jokic.

The case for Doncic this season revolved around his ability to lead the Lakers’ offense through high-volume scoring and primary playmaking responsibilities. At the same time, the team’s record and increased discussions about his contributions on defense likely influenced many voters to favor other candidates.

While Doncic missed out on another individual honor, he remains hopeful that he can return soon enough to help the Lakers chase their 18th championship. Currently, Doncic is out indefinitely, according to head coach JJ Redick. However, there is optimism that he could make a return during the first-round series against the Houston Rockets.
