St Kilda’s Ambitious Recruitment Sparks 2026 Premiership Buzz
The St Kilda Football Club has significantly reshaped its playing list during the off-season, a move that has not gone unnoticed by AFL luminaries. With a series of high-profile acquisitions and a record-breaking contract extension, the Saints are generating considerable intrigue and optimism for their 2026 campaign.
Last season proved to be a challenging one for the club, as they managed only nine victories from their 23 matches. Compounding the disappointment, five of these wins were by single-figure margins, contributing to a 12th-place finish on the ladder. This win rate was the equal-worst the Saints have experienced since 2018, highlighting the need for a significant shake-up.
Despite the on-field struggles, St Kilda adopted a bold and aggressive stance during the recent trade and free agency periods. The club clearly demonstrated a willingness to invest heavily in talent, aiming to inject new energy and capability into their squad.
The influx of talent is impressive, with notable names like Tom De Koning, Jack Silvagni, and Sam Flanders joining the ranks. Liam Ryan also arrives to bolster the forward line. Perhaps the most significant development, however, is young gun Nasiah Wanganeen-Milera’s monumental contract extension. The deal, reportedly worth $2 million per year, makes him the highest-paid player in the league and signals his commitment to the Saints’ long-term vision.
While the Saints are not currently considered premiership favourites, sitting outside the top five in early betting markets, there’s a growing sentiment that coach Ross Lyon is well-positioned to maximise the potential of his revitalised squad.
Collingwood legend Mick McGuane has expressed his belief that Lyon is adapting his coaching philosophy to suit the modern game and the players he now has at his disposal.
“While Ross has historically been a defence over attack philosophical coach, I reckon he is making the adjustment to align himself with the way the game has to be played today,” McGuane commented on 3AW’s Wide World of Sports. “He has recruited the right personnel. He needed to change his midfield dynamic, and Wanganeen-Milera has to be a constant throughout that part of the ground.”
McGuane elaborated on how the new recruits are set to benefit the existing stars. “Of course, he is going to get some scrutiny because that is what good players get, but the recruitment of Flanders means (Jack) Sinclair can go through there, and Mitch Owens is a big body, too. It is going to change the dynamic,” he explained.
The forward line also appears significantly strengthened. “When you complement that with a forward ruckman in (Rowan) Marshall and a ruck-forward in De Koning, plus you have Max King coming into the mix… I just think they are going to play fast and play a daring game of footy that will be exciting to watch,” McGuane added.
A key shift, according to McGuane, is the club’s newfound ability to tailor their playing style to their specific personnel. This contrasts with previous years where the available talent might have dictated a more rigid approach.
A Tailored Approach to Success
“They finally have the players where you can say, ‘We are going to tailor the style of play around what we’ve got’,” McGuane stated. “That is what good coaches do; they make the necessary adjustments with the personnel they’ve got.” This strategic flexibility is seen as a crucial element in unlocking the team’s full potential.
Jimmy Bartel, host of Wide World of Sports, echoed McGuane’s optimism. He indicated that he is “buying some early stock on the Saints this year,” not just based on the established stars but also on the promising group of developing young players. This endorsement from a premiership captain adds further weight to the growing excitement surrounding St Kilda.
The Saints’ 2026 season is set to commence in the Opening Round on Sunday, March 8, with a highly anticipated clash against Collingwood. This fixture will provide an immediate test of their revamped squad and offer the first glimpse of whether their ambitious off-season moves will translate into on-field success. The combination of experienced recruits, a burgeoning midfield, and a potentially explosive forward line, all under the guidance of a coach known for his strategic acumen, has positioned St Kilda as a team to watch in the upcoming season. The club’s commitment to securing its core talent, exemplified by Wanganeen-Milera’s record deal, demonstrates a clear vision for sustained competitiveness.
