Madonna’s “Like a Virgin” Songwriter Billy Steinberg Dies at 75

The music world is mourning the loss of Billy Steinberg, a celebrated Grammy-winning songwriter whose lyrical prowess penned some of the most iconic anthems of the past four decades. Steinberg, renowned for his contributions to hits like Madonna’s “Like A Virgin” and Whitney Houston’s “So Emotional,” passed away at the age of 75 in Los Angeles after a battle with cancer.

His family described him as a “revolutionary lyricist,” whose words resonated deeply with millions. Throughout his illustrious 40-year career, Steinberg collaborated with a constellation of music’s biggest stars, including Cyndi Lauper, Celine Dion, and The Bangles. Even after his long-time songwriting partner, Tom Kelly, retired in the 1990s, Steinberg continued to craft hits for contemporary artists such as Demi Lovato and JoJo.

Steinberg’s family shared that his songwriting process often began with intensely personal reflections, which he then artfully transformed into universally relatable anthems. “Billy Steinberg’s life was a testament to the enduring power of a well-written song – and to the idea that honesty, when set to music, can outlive us all,” they stated.

His extensive accolades included a Grammy Award for his significant contributions to Celine Dion’s 1996 blockbuster album, Falling Into You. However, those closest to him emphasised that Steinberg’s true passion lay not in the recognition, but in the profound connection forged through music – the “magic of hearing a crowd sing back something that once lived only in his notebook.”

His son, Ezra, shared a touching tribute, noting that his father instilled in him “not only his love of music, but his discipline, integrity, and reverence for great songwriting.” He added, “He believed in building things that last — in art, in relationships, and in legacy.”

A Legacy of Chart-Topping Hits

Steinberg’s breakthrough moment arrived in 1984 with the global phenomenon “Like A Virgin,” co-written with Tom Kelly. This smash hit, which topped charts worldwide and reached number one in the US, set the stage for an extraordinary career.

The success continued with Cyndi Lauper’s 1986 anthem “True Colors,” followed by Whitney Houston’s energetic “So Emotional” the next year. Steinberg’s prolific pen also delivered hits for artists like Nicole Scherzinger with “Don’t Hold Your Breath” and JoJo’s “Too Little Too Late.” His exceptional talent was formally recognised when he was inducted into the Songwriters’ Hall of Fame in 2011.

Tributes from Collaborators

Cyndi Lauper, a frequent collaborator, took to Instagram to express her sorrow. “I’m so sorry to hear that my friend Billy Steinberg has passed away,” she wrote. “He was such a nice guy and very supportive. My thoughts are with his family, loved ones, and Tom during this sad time.”

Lauper further elaborated on their creative partnership in a statement to Billboard, highlighting Steinberg’s skill in capturing the nuances of emotion. “He and Tom [Kelly] had such a way of capturing the range within an emotion, from the subtlety to urgency,” she said. Reflecting on songs like “True Colors,” “Unconditional Love,” “I Drove All Night,” “My First Night Without You,” and “Heading West,” Lauper expressed her admiration for his genius, citing the line “I’m like a letter with no address” from “True Colors” as a prime example.

She recounted the collaborative process for “True Colors,” acknowledging the effort involved but ultimately cherishing Steinberg’s affirmation that she had created her “own ‘very exquisitely beautiful version’ of the song.” This sentiment underscored the deep respect and understanding that defined their working relationship.

Steinberg’s ability to imbue his lyrics with personal meaning, while simultaneously crafting them into universal declarations of emotion, cemented his status as one of the most impactful songwriters of his generation. His legacy will undoubtedly continue to inspire and resonate through the timeless songs he leaves behind.
