Game 1 Highlights
The Philadelphia Flyers claimed victory in Game 1 at PPG Paints Arena on Saturday, despite some positive moments for the Pittsburgh Penguins’ home crowd. One of the standout performances came from Evgeni Malkin, who scored his 68th career playoff goal. Additionally, Bryan Rust provided a late spark by scoring with just a minute remaining in regulation.
First Period
The game began with a few penalties. At 1:53, Flyers defenseman Rasmus Ristolainen was given a two-minute penalty for roughing Elmer Soderblom. Shortly after, Kris Letang also received a two-minute penalty for tripping Tyson Foerster.
At 8:54, Christian Dvorak of the Flyers scored a goal, but it was waived off due to goaltender interference. At 11:16, Sidney Crosby earned a roughing minor after pulling off Jamie Drysdale’s helmet, while Drysdale was assessed interference, resulting in a 4-on-4 situation.
By the end of the first period, the scoreboard remained even. Despite four penalties being called, neither team managed to score on the power play. The Flyers led in shots, 10–5, heading into the intermission.
Second Period
Stuart Skinner, the Penguins’ goaltender, made 14 consecutive saves to keep the net closed. However, the Flyers finally broke through at 10:41 of the second period when Jamie Drysdale scored his first career playoff goal, assisted by Zegras and Barkey, giving the Flyers a 1-0 lead.
The Penguins quickly responded, as Evgeni Malkin tied the game with 4:09 remaining in the second period, assisted by Rakell and Letang. This goal marked Malkin’s 68th career playoff goal, bringing momentum back to the home crowd.
The second period ended with the score tied at 1-1. The Flyers had a power play with 48 seconds remaining due to a penalty on Anthony Mantha for cross-checking Ristolainen. The Flyers led in shots again, 16-10, entering the third period.
Third Period
The PPG Paints Arena fell silent as Travis Sanheim scored his third career playoff goal, putting the Flyers ahead 2-1 at the 10-minute mark. The goal was assisted by Ristolainen and Dvorak.
Flyers rookie Porter Martone further extended the lead, scoring his first career playoff goal to make it 3-1. His goal silenced the crowd at PPG Paints Arena.
A series of cross-checking incidents involving Travis Sanheim and a slash by Sidney Crosby resulted in both players receiving two-minute penalties, leading to a 4-on-4 situation for two minutes.
Bryan Rust capitalized on the opportunity, scoring with less than a minute left in the third period, assisted by Malkin and Karlsson. This goal was Rust’s 22nd career playoff goal.
The final buzzer echoed through the arena as the Philadelphia Flyers secured Game 1 in Pittsburgh. While the Penguins faced a setback, they are expected to “Flip The Script” in the remaining games of the first round.
