Zimbabwean Football Association Announces Coach Resignation
Zimbabwe’s football association, ZIFA, has announced the resignation of Marian Marinica as the head coach of the senior men’s national team, known as the Warriors. This development comes just five months after Marinica was appointed in November of last year.
Marinica, a Romanian coach, led the Warriors in the 2025 AFCON final, but the team failed to secure a single victory, ultimately being eliminated in the first round. While the specific reasons for his resignation have not been disclosed, ZIFA has confirmed that Kaitano Tembo will take over as the interim head coach for the upcoming Unity Cup tournament. The event is scheduled to take place next month in the United Kingdom, and Tembo will be supported by Takesure Chiragwi, who previously held the same role before resigning last year.
In a statement released by ZIFA, it was said:
“ZIFA has accepted his resignation and thanks Coach Marinica for his contribution to the Warriors. The Association wishes him well in his future endeavors.”
The statement further added:
“Kaitano Tembo has been appointed Interim Head Coach and will lead the team for the upcoming Unity Cup assignment in the United Kingdom. He will be assisted by Takesure Chiragwi, who has been appointed Assistant Coach.”
Controversial Tenure Under Scrutiny
Marinica’s tenure as the Warriors’ coach has been marked by controversy. One of the most notable incidents occurred when he decided to drop Marshall Munetsi, the vice-captain of the team, from the AFCON squad. This decision sparked significant debate among fans and media alike.
It is widely believed that the conflict between Marinica and Munetsi played a key role in the coach’s resignation. The tension between the two has been a subject of discussion in the local football community, with many speculating that it contributed to the eventual decision to step down.
New Leadership for the Warriors
With the appointment of Kaitano Tembo as the interim head coach, there is hope that the Warriors will find stability and improved performance moving forward. Tembo, who has experience in coaching, will now take on the responsibility of leading the team during the Unity Cup. His appointment signals a shift in leadership and strategy for the national team.
Takesure Chiragwi, who has returned to the coaching role, brings with him a wealth of knowledge and experience. His return is seen as a positive move, as he has previously worked with the team and understands its dynamics.
Future Prospects
As the Warriors prepare for the Unity Cup, the focus will now be on how the new coaching team will shape the team’s performance. Fans are eager to see if the changes will lead to better results and a stronger presence on the international stage.
The transition from Marinica to Tembo marks an important chapter in the history of Zimbabwean football. With new leadership in place, the team will look to build on past experiences and strive for success in upcoming competitions.
