Markram’s T20 WC Prowess: Morkel on Leadership and Timing

South Africa’s T20 World Cup campaign is gaining momentum, and a key factor in their success appears to be the exceptional form of captain Aiden Markram. According to Albie Morkel, the team’s coaching consultant, Markram possesses a remarkable ability to elevate his game when the pressure is at its peak during major tournaments. Morkel highlighted Markram’s leadership qualities, noting that he has earned the respect of the entire squad.

Markram’s recent performance against New Zealand was a prime example of his tournament prowess. Chasing a target of 176, he launched an aggressive assault, smashing a half-century off just 19 deliveries. This explosive innings, coupled with his unbeaten 86, set the foundation for a comfortable victory for the Proteas. Across three innings in the tournament so far, Markram has amassed 150 runs at an impressive average of 75 and a formidable strike rate of 179.

Markram’s Captaincy Evolution

While Markram has a strong overall T20 record since the beginning of 2025, with 1,557 runs in 48 innings at an average of 37.1 and a strike rate of 148, his batting statistics as South Africa’s T20I captain have seen a significant transformation. After a dry spell of not registering a fifty in his first 33 T20I innings as skipper, Markram has now struck four half-centuries in his last eight innings. This sharp upturn in form coincides with South Africa’s remarkable run rate in the competition, which stands at 10.1 – the highest among all participating teams.

Morkel elaborated on this shift, suggesting that while it’s difficult to pinpoint one single reason, Markram is undoubtedly a “big tournament player.” He also pointed to the SA20 league, where many South African players found good form, contributing to their readiness for the World Cup. “Then, like I said, he knows when to step it up,” Morkel remarked. He also touched upon the potential impact of fatigue when T20 series follow Test matches, which can influence performance. However, he reiterated Markram’s consistent quality, referencing his strong showing in the previous World Cup and his well-respected leadership.

The X-Factor: Dewald Brevis

Much of the pre-tournament discussion surrounding South Africa has also revolved around the explosive talent of Dewald Brevis. His audacious hitting makes him one of the most thrilling prospects in their batting lineup. While Brevis is yet to consistently hit his straps in the World Cup, Morkel expressed unwavering confidence in his ability to deliver.

Morkel described Brevis as an “x-factor player,” emphasizing that the team doesn’t want to stifle his natural attacking instincts by imposing specific playing styles. “We feel if you sort of ask him to play a certain way, you take away that x-factor,” Morkel explained. “He’s going to break your heart at some stage, but he’s also going to win you games.” The strategy, therefore, is to allow Brevis to play his game, with the assurance that other players in the squad are capable of adapting to situations if needed.

Bowling Prowess: Back to Basics

On the bowling front, Morkel, a former seam-bowling all-rounder himself, stressed the importance of focusing on fundamental skills, particularly seam-up and slower balls. He believes that rather than trying to outsmart batters with an ever-increasing array of variations, the key to success lies in executing the basics exceptionally well.

Morkel acknowledged that the pitches, particularly in Ahmedabad where the team has been based, have been very conducive to batting. In such conditions, where batters are looking to hit boundaries, bowlers need to be unpredictable and focus on taking away the lengths that allow for big shots. He noted that the days of batters simply rotating the strike for singles and twos are largely gone, highlighting the need for bowlers to be more attacking.

Addressing Death Bowling Challenges

Morkel candidly discussed the challenges bowlers face in executing plans during the death overs, especially when preparing for global events. He pointed out that the pitches in South Africa, where many of the players hone their T20 skills, are not always ideal for the format and can sometimes allow batters to get away with more. When players then transition to conditions where the wickets are still good, variations like slower balls might not be as effective.

The focus, he stressed, has been on nailing yorkers. Morkel suggested that this skill, crucial for death bowling, has perhaps diminished across the cricketing world, not just within the South African team. He posited that with the proliferation of variations, bowlers can sometimes become clouded, losing sight of these fundamental skills. He also highlighted the importance of utilising ground dimensions and making minor adjustments to suit different playing areas.

Trusting the Pace Spearhead

South Africa’s pace spearhead, Kagiso Rabada, has had a somewhat challenging start to the tournament. However, he showed promising signs with a 0-27 spell against New Zealand. Morkel, however, is not overly concerned by Rabada’s performances thus far.

“It’s not a concern,” Morkel stated. “If you look around T20 cricket, that can happen to any bowler at any stage where the pressure just gets to you and you maybe have a day.” He reaffirmed Rabada’s status as the team’s premier fast bowler and expressed the team’s unwavering support. Morkel believes that over-analysing or becoming too tactical with experienced bowlers can be counterproductive. For Rabada, the approach is to accept the performance and move forward with a focus on improvement.

Ngidi’s Impressive Form

In contrast, fellow right-arm pacer Lungi Ngidi has been in excellent form, claiming eight wickets at an economy rate of 7.6. Morkel was particularly impressed with Ngidi, describing him as a bowler who has become exceptionally difficult to read at the highest level.

Morkel highlighted Ngidi’s ability to swing the new ball and his knack for keeping batters guessing under pressure. He indicated that Ngidi doesn’t require extensive coaching, as he understands his game and the nuances of T20 cricket. The team is fortunate that Ngidi has been at the top of his game in the initial matches.
