New Heist Thriller “No Ordinary Heist” Unpacks One of Britain’s Most Audacious Crimes
A new, nail-biting heist thriller, No Ordinary Heist, is set to hit UK cinemas on March 27, delving into the gripping true story behind one of the most notorious crimes in British history. The film stars acclaimed actor Eddie Marsan and Saipan’s Éanna Hardwicke, and promises to keep audiences on the edge of their seats with its tale of a daring bank robbery that unfolded under extraordinary circumstances.
The film’s narrative is inspired by the events of December 2004, when a staggering £26,500,000 was pilfered from the Northern Bank in Belfast. What makes this heist particularly chilling is that two bank executives were held hostage for an entire 24 hours, forced under duress to facilitate the raid on their own institution.
Eddie Marsan, who portrays one of the key figures in the film, expressed his immediate fascination with the script. He told BBC Radio Ulster, “I was captivated from the very first 10 pages. The concept of the bank manager and the security guard being coerced into robbing their own bank was just brilliant.” Marsan further elaborated on the film’s impact, noting, “It was a brilliantly paced script. And then, when you add the music, the score in the film created such incredible tension.”
Cork actor Éanna Hardwicke, who shares the screen with Marsan, also spoke about his draw to the project. He revealed, “I knew at the time that this was the biggest bank heist in British and Irish history. When I read Colin’s script and met him, I realised quite quickly that it was very much based on those real events.” Hardwicke highlighted that while the film draws inspiration from the Northern Bank robbery, his focus, and that of the scriptwriter, was on the complex relationship between the two men who were compelled to carry out the robbery. “That’s what drew me to it,” he stated.
The Heist That Shook Northern Ireland
The audacious robbery took place just days before Christmas in 2004. A group of armed individuals infiltrated the homes of two Northern Bank officials located in Belfast and County Down. With their families held captive as leverage, the bank executives were instructed to empty the bank’s vaults and load the substantial sum of cash into a waiting van.
The aftermath of the heist saw significant repercussions for the Northern Bank. In response to the security breach and the theft of its notes, the bank made the decision to withdraw most of its existing bank notes and re-issue them in a new colour and design. This drastic measure was an attempt to render the stolen currency unusable.
Adding to the intrigue, some of the stolen bank notes eventually surfaced in Cork, a stark reminder of the far-reaching consequences of the crime.
The Investigation and Lingering Questions
Following the robbery, a significant investigation was launched. Chris Ward, from Poleglass, who was identified as one of the two bank employees forced to assist the robbers, was arrested in November 2005. He was taken into custody on suspicion of being an “inside man” who facilitated the crime. However, after a lengthy legal process, Ward was found not guilty of facilitating the robbery in October 2008.
To this day, no individual has been convicted of direct involvement in the actual robbery, and the vast majority of the £26.5 million remains unrecovered. The case continues to be one of the most perplexing unsolved crimes in recent British and Irish history.

This follows the confirmed return of a highly successful BBC psychological thriller, which captivated an audience of 10 million viewers and is making a comeback after a decade-long hiatus.
