Matt Fitzpatrick’s Winning Strategy at the 2026 RBC Heritage
Matt Fitzpatrick’s second victory at the RBC Heritage was a repeat of his first, with a clutch approach shot at Harbour Town’s 18th hole during a playoff. This time, he flighted a Ping i210 4-iron into the wind from 196 yards to just 13 feet and sank the putt to defeat Scottie Scheffler. The win came after a bogey on the 72nd hole in regulation, which forced the playoff.
Fitzpatrick, who has now won twice this season, struck the winning putt with his Bettinardi BB1 Flow prototype putter, the same blade he used for all four of his PGA Tour wins. However, it wasn’t the putter he started the year with. His return to world-class form over the last six months began in the fall when he followed the professional trend and switched to a Bettinardi BB48 mid-mallet putter. He won with that putter at the DP World Tour Championship and used it for his first four starts of the PGA Tour season in 2026.
But Fitzpatrick struggled with putting in those events, so he switched back to the blade that helped him win the 2022 U.S. Open and finish second at the Players Championship before winning the following week at the Valspar. Since returning to the BB1, he has gained strokes on the greens in all four events and now has two wins, a runner-up finish, and a T18 at the Masters. These two victories are the only ones this season on the PGA Tour using a blade putter and the first since last year’s 3M Open.
The putter features a unique C-Groove face and is essentially a replica of the Yes! Tracy II, which Fitzpatrick used in college. Bettinardi took 30 prototypes to meet the 2013 U.S. Amateur champion’s exacting standards. It is crafted from Bettinardi’s unique Double Aged Stainless Steel (DASS), typically used in their Tour putters.
Fitzpatrick also uses a 10-year-old set of Ping S55 irons with an old Ping CFS shaft. These irons are super flat to compensate for his out-to-in swing path, helping him start the ball straighter with a pull-draw shot shape.

The Tour-inspired i240 advances our popular Players technology, providing added forgiveness along with the control, look and feel that will appeal to a wide range of skill levels. It’s PING’s highest-launching Players model, giving ers more control and the ability to consistently hit their distance numbers and stop the ball close to the hole. A new ABS badge in the true cavity-back design is 8.5g lighter, and combined with an elastomer insert allows for more perimeter weighting to increase the MOI in the mid and long irons. This helps achieve an 11% reduction in dispersion. The badge and insert contribute to a more desirable sound and a softer, responsive feel from the 431 stainless steel cast head.
