Expansion of MBS International Airport’s Snow Removal Facility
MBS International Airport is set to undergo a significant transformation with the addition of a new 13,000-square-foot facility dedicated to snow removal equipment. This expansion project will be carried out by Midland-based Three Rivers Corporation, which has been awarded a $5.5 million construction contract. The decision was made by the airport’s commission on Thursday, April 16, marking a major step forward in modernizing the airport’s infrastructure.
The current facility, built in 1980, has long been inadequate for the needs of the airport’s operations. James Canders, the MBS Airport Director, explained that the need for an upgrade became clear due to the growing size of the airport’s snow removal fleet. “We decided on improving the building due to the fact that several pieces of our existing fleet will not properly fit in the building we have,” he said.
In addition to providing more space for equipment, the new facility will also address several deficiencies in the existing structure. One of the most notable issues is the lack of employee amenities such as locker rooms, showers, and kitchen facilities. “This new facility will address these shortcomings,” Canders added.
Key Features of the New Facility
The expansion project includes several important improvements designed to enhance both functionality and employee well-being:
- A dedicated maintenance garage and mechanics work area
- Administrative offices and support spaces
- Exterior refurbishment of the existing snow removal building
- An employee break area and new restrooms
- Associated site, utility, and pavement improvements
These upgrades are expected to significantly improve the efficiency of snow removal operations and provide a better working environment for airport staff.
Funding and Timeline
The project is primarily funded through the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA) of 2021. This funding is administered via the Federal Aviation Administration’s (FAA) Airport Improvement Program, along with support from the Michigan Department of Transportation.
Canders noted that approximately $7.5 million in IIJA funds had been allocated for this project back in 2021. However, there is a risk of losing $1.5 million annually if the funds are not used by 2026. To avoid this, the airport used the first $1.5 million for facility design and equipment purchases in 2025, with another $5 million allocated for this construction project.
Plans are now in motion to submit the grant application to the FAA within the next two weeks. “Grant awards are expected this fall,” Canders said. “Construction can then proceed as early as fall, with an 18-month expected build time.”
Contract Award
Three Rivers Corporation was selected as the low bidder among seven total bids submitted for the project. This decision reflects the company’s reputation for quality and cost-effective construction solutions.
The expansion of the snow removal facility at MBS International Airport represents a significant investment in the airport’s future. With improved infrastructure and modernized facilities, the airport is better positioned to meet the demands of winter weather and ensure continued safe and efficient operations.
