McGinn’s Warning: Villa Must Avoid ‘Nearly Men’ Tag Under Emery
Aston Villa captain John McGinn has issued a stark warning to his teammates: the club risks being labelled football’s “nearly men” if they fail to secure silverware under the guidance of manager Unai Emery. Since Emery’s arrival in October 2022, when Villa were precariously close to the relegation zone, the team has undergone a dramatic transformation. They have consistently qualified for European competition and, in a memorable campaign last season, pushed eventual Champions League winners Paris Saint-Germain to the brink in the quarter-finals.
Despite a recent dip in form, Villa currently occupy a strong fourth position in the Premier League. Furthermore, they stand on the cusp of reaching the Europa League quarter-finals, needing only to avoid defeat against Lille in their upcoming clash. A victory in this competition would not only secure a coveted spot in next season’s Champions League but also fulfil a long-standing ambition for the claret and blue faithful, who haven’t celebrated a major trophy win since 1996.
McGinn, renowned for his combative performances and leadership on the pitch, underscored the team’s ambition. “Unai Emery has a reputation for getting over the finishing line, not just getting close to it,” he stated. “We don’t want to be a team that people say, ‘Yeah, they were alright’. We want tangible success, something concrete to show for our efforts.”

The midfielder elaborated on the pressure and expectation that comes with playing for a club like Aston Villa, especially with Emery at the helm. “We understand the expectation and that we are considered among the favourites to win this competition,” McGinn continued. “However, it’s entirely up to us to deliver the performances and results that justify that belief. Last season, after the PSG game, we received a lot of praise, but ultimately, we didn’t achieve our objective. That’s the mindset the manager has instilled in us.”
He acknowledged past shortcomings, particularly in managing crucial ties effectively. “There have been instances where we haven’t managed games properly, haven’t seen ties through to their conclusion,” McGinn admitted. “But the lessons learned from those experiences are invaluable. We can use them to our advantage and give ourselves the best possible opportunity to go that one step further this time.”
Midfield Resilience: McGinn’s Return Boosts Villa
McGinn’s return to the Aston Villa squad after an extended layoff of nearly two months due to injury is a significant boost for the club. His presence alongside Boubacar Kamara and Youri Tielemans forms what is arguably Villa’s strongest midfield trio. The unfortunate reality, however, is that all three key midfielders suffered significant injuries in January, a period that coincided with a noticeable downturn in the team’s performances.
While Tielemans is expected to make a comeback following the international break, the prognosis for Kamara is more severe. The French international, widely considered Villa’s most influential player, will unfortunately not feature again this season. It is hardly surprising, therefore, that Villa’s form has faltered in the absence of such crucial personnel.
McGinn candidly addressed the impact of these midfield absences. “When you lose three key midfielders, I believe most teams in the country would find it a struggle,” he remarked. “I feel the weight of expectation and the pressure to constantly remind players of the standards required to play for Aston Villa. It’s a demanding club, and when you set a high benchmark, you’re expected to consistently meet it. Falling short inevitably leads to criticism, and that’s simply part of the territory when you represent a club of this stature.”
The team’s ability to navigate these challenges and maintain their high standards will be crucial as they push for silverware under Emery’s demanding but ultimately rewarding tutelage. The upcoming European fixture against Lille presents an immediate opportunity to demonstrate their resilience and renewed determination.
