Medvedev Hails Kim, Seeks Greater Cooperation

Strengthening Ties: Russia and North Korea Deepen Strategic Partnership

Dmitri Medvedev, the second-highest-ranking official in Russia and a key figure within the Security Council, has extended a congratulatory message to North Korean leader Kim Jong-un. In his communication, Medvedev highlighted the emergence of “new possibilities” in the evolving relationship between North Korea and Russia.

North Korea’s state-run newspaper, Rodong Sinmun, published the full text of Medvedev’s message on the 28th, which was sent on the 20th. As a close ally of Russian President Vladimir Putin, Medvedev previously served as Russia’s president from 2008 to 2012, during which time Putin transitioned to the role of prime minister due to term limits.

According to the report, Medvedev praised the current year as one that reinforced the “unwavering development trend” of the relationship between the Russian Federation and the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, now characterized as a “comprehensive strategic partnership.” He emphasized the significance of the Russian delegation’s visit to Pyongyang for the 80th-anniversary celebration of the Workers’ Party of Korea in October. The visit included discussions with Kim Jong-un and an observation of the military parade. Medvedev described the hospitality he received in North Korea as unforgettable and expressed his appreciation for the fruitful meeting during his trip.

In his message, Medvedev also mentioned the potential for expanded cooperation between the United Russia Party and the Workers’ Party of Korea, as well as broader mutual collaboration between the two nations. He expressed hope that this would lead to new opportunities for joint initiatives and projects aimed at benefiting both countries’ populations.

Putin’s Message Highlights Growing Alliance

Earlier on the 18th, Russian President Vladimir Putin also sent a congratulatory message to Kim Jong-un. In his statement, Putin emphasized the special importance of the past year for relations between Moscow and Pyongyang. He specifically referenced the participation of Korean People’s Army soldiers in liberating the Kursk region from what he called the “aggressor” (Ukraine) and the subsequent involvement of Korean engineers on Russian soil. These actions, according to Putin, demonstrated the “unbreakable friendship and combat camaraderie” between the two nations.

Putin also expressed confidence that the friendly and allied relations between Russia and North Korea would continue to strengthen across all areas. He pledged to pursue constructive cooperation on regional and international issues.

Kim Jong-un Responds with Strong Affirmation

On the 27th, Kim Jong-un responded to Putin’s message, stating that the North Korea-Russia relationship had been further solidified into the “most genuine alliance.” He emphasized the shared commitment between the two nations, noting their unity “sharing blood in the same trench and facing life and death together.”

This exchange underscores the deepening ties between Russia and North Korea, marked by mutual respect, strategic collaboration, and a shared vision for future cooperation. Both leaders have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening the partnership, signaling a significant shift in their diplomatic and political relationship.
