Mel Schilling Steps Back from Married At First Sight Australia Amid Health Battle
Renowned relationship expert Mel Schilling has confirmed she will be stepping away from her role on Married At First Sight Australia, bringing an end to her long-standing tenure on the popular reality program. The decision, announced via a heartfelt video montage shared on Instagram, marks the conclusion of her involvement after 12 “extraordinary seasons.”
Schilling elaborated on her decision, stating that it was not one made lightly. “In recent years, my health challenges and living in the UK spending up to three months a year away from my family is no longer sustainable,” she explained. “It has become clear that I must make a change that puts my family, health and time at the very centre of my life.”
Reflecting on her time with the show, Schilling expressed deep gratitude for her experience. “What began as a small social experiment has grown into a global phenomenon, and I have felt truly privileged to be part of that journey,” she wrote. “I am incredibly grateful to the fans, the production team, and my fellow experts for their trust and passion over the years.”
Mel Schilling has been a familiar face on Married At First Sight Australia since its second season in 2015.
Her departure from the Australian series is framed not with sadness, but with a “deep sense of gratitude for everything we’ve achieved together.” While she is moving on from the Australian iteration, Schilling indicated her intention to continue her work with Married At First Sight UK, expressing, “Thank you for being part of this chapter with me.”
This announcement comes as Schilling continues to navigate her ongoing battle with colon cancer. She publicly shared her diagnosis in December 2023, posting a poignant message on social media accompanied by a photograph of herself with her husband, Gareth Brisbane, and their daughter, Maddie. “‘You have cancer’ – Three little words that everyone dreads but no one ever expects to hear,” she revealed. “Last Thursday my consultant told me those 3 words.”
The symptoms that ultimately led to her diagnosis began subtly during the filming of MAFS in Australia. Schilling recalled experiencing severe cramps, even being “doubled over in pain” at one point during a reunion dinner party. Initially, she attributed these discomforts to the extensive travel involved in her work.
However, her intuition told her something more serious was at play. “I saw my GP in Sydney and he put it down to constipation, gave me some laxatives and sent me on my way,” she recounted. “Fortunately I knew something still wasn’t right so I booked in for a scan when I returned to the UK. On Thursday I was told I had colon cancer and in an instant, my whole life changed.”
Schilling candidly acknowledged the unexpected nature of life’s twists, quoting John Lennon: “life is what happens when you’re busy making other plans, how right he was.” Her personal experience has underscored the importance of heeding one’s body, and she urged her followers to “always seek help if something is wrong and to not ignore it because ‘it might just save your life.’”
Sources close to the situation have indicated that the cancer has unfortunately spread, making Schilling’s announcement a foreseeable development.
Viewers of the most recent season of Married At First Sight Australia may have observed a shift in Schilling’s on-screen presence. Reports suggest that her involvement in the 2026 season was largely confined to commitment ceremonies, which could be interpreted as an early sign of her intention to gradually step back from the demanding schedule. Her consistent presence since 2015 has made her a beloved and integral part of the show’s fabric, and her departure will undoubtedly be felt by fans and cast members alike.
