Mel Schilling’s Devastating Health Update: “I Don’t Know How Long I Have Left”

MAFS Expert Mel Schilling Reveals Devastating Cancer Progression

Renowned relationship expert and fixture on the hit reality series Married at First Sight (MAFS), Mel Schilling, has delivered a heart-wrenching update regarding her ongoing battle with cancer. In a candid and extensive social media post, Schilling revealed that her cancer has unfortunately spread to her brain, and her medical team has indicated that there are no further treatment options available.

Schilling, who has been an integral part of the MAFS expert panel for 12 seasons, shared that in late February of this year, routine medical check-ups uncovered small nodules on her lungs. This discovery marked a significant and devastating turn in her health journey.

“The cancer had metastasised and my world changed again in an instant,” Schilling stated in her update. She detailed her previous struggles, explaining that over the past two years, while simultaneously filming MAFS, she underwent 16 rounds of chemotherapy. Hope had resurfaced when she was informed she was eligible for a groundbreaking clinical trial specifically tailored to her genetic makeup, slated to commence in March 2026. This news had previously ignited her optimism about potentially overcoming the illness.

However, the festive season brought a stark and unwelcome change. Schilling experienced blinding headaches and numbness down her right side, symptoms that ultimately signalled a far more serious development for the mother of one.

“After many tests, I was told the cancer had spread to the left side of my brain and, despite subsequent radiotherapy sessions, my oncology team have now told me there is nothing further they can do,” the 54-year-old revealed.

The devastating news has profoundly impacted her daily life, rendering simple tasks incredibly challenging. “My light is starting to fade,” she admitted. “I am relying on my beautiful family to look after me. I honestly don’t know how long I have left, but I do know that I will fight to my last breath and be surrounded by the love and support of my people.”

Mel Schilling, who resides in London with her 10-year-old daughter Maddie and husband Gareth Brisbane, first publicly disclosed her colon cancer diagnosis in 2023. At the time, a tumour, which she affectionately nicknamed ‘Terry’, the size of a lemon, was surgically removed the following year. She had appeared to be on a positive path towards recovery.

The decision to step away from her role on MAFS, announced just last month, was made to allow her to be closer to home. It has now become clear that her declining health was the significant underlying reason for this move.

“This hasn’t been a choice I’ve made lightly,” she stated previously. “In recent years, my health challenges and living in the UK, spending up to three months a year away from my family, is no longer sustainable. It has become clear that I must make a change that puts my family, health and time at the very centre of my life.”

Reflecting on the initial moment she received her diagnosis in an interview with TV WEEK earlier this year, Schilling recalled the shock. “In the moment, I don’t think I processed it at all,” she said. “I went straight into work mode and started saying, ‘I can’t do this. I’ve got to be on set in two weeks’ – whereas my hubby was beside himself. He got up and had to leave the room – he instantly felt the emotion of it.”

At that time, she urged individuals experiencing symptoms to seek prompt medical attention, a message she reiterated with renewed urgency in her latest announcement.

“If I could leave you with one thing, it would simply be this: If something doesn’t feel right, please get it checked out. It might save your life.”
