MAFS Star Melissa Akbay Appears Downcast Amidst Marriage Woes
It’s been a tough start for Melissa Akbay on Married At First Sight (MAFS), with her reality TV marriage to Luke Fourniotis showing early signs of significant strain. Just a week into the popular Nine Network series, the 28-year-old communications specialist has already garnered a “villain” reputation among many viewers, largely due to her perceived treatment of her new husband.
Spotted out and about in Sydney during filming, Melissa cut a solitary figure, engaging in some solo shopping. Her attire for the outing was casual and understated: a loose-fitting pink cardigan layered over a simple white T-shirt, paired with wide-leg blue jeans that featured a flared hem. Light pink sneakers completed the ensemble, alongside a black and white canvas bag slung over her shoulder and large black headphones.
During her solo excursion, the reality star was seen enjoying a small bag of chips while navigating the city streets, with Luke conspicuously absent from her side. She also made a stop at a local supermarket, emerging with a substantial haul of groceries, suggesting a solitary dining experience back at her Sydney apartment.
A Rocky Road from the Altar
The union between Melissa and Luke certainly didn’t get off to the smoothest of starts. The groom’s tardiness to their wedding, exacerbated by a forgotten ring, set a somewhat chaotic tone. Adding to the awkwardness, Luke’s habit of chewing gum while Melissa recited her vows reportedly gave her the “ick” from the get-go.
Their honeymoon on Louth Island did little to foster a warmer connection. Melissa, it seems, wasn’t ready to share her bed, with Luke reportedly relegated to sleeping on the couch. This lack of intimacy and enthusiasm was further evident at the first dinner party, where Melissa candidly expressed her distinct lack of interest in Luke to the other female participants.
The Ranking Revelation
The tension escalated during Tuesday night’s photo ranking challenge. In a move that visibly impacted Luke, Melissa placed him second, behind another groom, Grayson McIvor. When explaining her decision to Luke, Melissa stated, “If someone was to describe who would suit me based on physicality, it would probably be him,” referring to Grayson.
She continued, “And then you. I think you are attractive, you take care of yourself, have a good physique, but I want to be true to myself. So I will put you a close second to Grayson.”
This revelation left Luke feeling particularly dejected. He confided in producers, admitting, “That just knocks me down further, to be honest. Right now I feel massively under-confident.” Speaking to Daily Mail, Luke expressed his shock at Melissa’s public ranking, noting how it undermined their burgeoning relationship.
“Being the only groom not ranked first wasn’t easy,” he admitted. “If you’re in a relationship, you want to make the other person feel secure. Ranking someone first is such an easy way to do that.” Luke highlighted that even if Melissa privately held reservations, the public rejection was particularly stinging. “Even if you think I’m second or third, it doesn’t hurt to put me first,” he argued. “It just makes someone feel liked, feel secure. That didn’t happen.”
However, Luke was quick to point out that the ranking itself wasn’t the sole source of his distress. “The main thing was she didn’t even let me in as a friend,” he revealed. “This experiment would have been so much more enjoyable for both of us if we could have just been friends.”
The Storm Clouds Gather
Looking ahead, a teaser for Wednesday night’s episode suggests that the frosty dynamic between Melissa and Luke is set to intensify. Melissa is seen confronting Luke with a “pressing issue” she wishes to discuss. The narration indicates that the root of Melissa’s discomfort stems from social media comments about her, posted by Luke’s sisters.
Following Luke’s decision to pack his bags and stay at a “mate’s place” on Tuesday night, it appears the relationship is teetering on the brink of collapse.
