Micah Richards: My Career-Ending Injury and the Booze That Followed

Micah Richards Opens Up About Battle with Depression and Alcohol Post-Retirement

Former Manchester City and Aston Villa defender Micah Richards has bravely shared his struggles with depression and alcohol abuse following his early retirement from professional football due to persistent knee injuries. The popular pundit, who officially hung up his boots at the age of 31 in 2019, detailed his difficult transition away from the game during a segment on CBS’s Champions League broadcast.

Richards, now 37, revealed the depth of his mental health challenges, admitting, “I was definitely depressed. But I didn’t address it.” He explained how he turned to alcohol as a coping mechanism. “I was drinking a lot to sort of mask it,” he confessed.

A turning point came with the intervention of a close friend, referred to as “Madge.” This friend helped Richards re-evaluate his priorities, prompting him to consider his happiness and the importance of his family and relationships over the superficial trappings of a footballer’s life. “It was just a facade. It was all the bells and whistles that come with being a professional footballer,” Richards reflected. This perspective shift led him to understand that “there’s more to life than cars and houses. And it’s about relationships and the people around you.”

Despite the dark period, Richards identifies as a naturally positive person, a trait he believes ultimately helped him navigate the difficult circumstances. “Everyone always says to me, you can’t always be like that. I’m always like this other than when I’m tired,” he stated. “I like to see the good in people. I always try to uplift people. And that’s just the way I’ve been all my life.” He concluded, “So as bad as my injury was at the time, and yes, I was depressed, 100 per cent agree with that. But I tried to look at it in a positive [way] instead of a negative.”

The Physical Toll of a Career-Ending Injury

The severity of Richards’ knee issues became apparent by the end of his playing career. He required fluid to be drained from his knee every three days, a stark illustration of the chronic pain he endured. These physical ailments were not new; he had been plagued by them since his teenage years.

During his time at Aston Villa, the damage to his right knee was so significant that he could run and jump but was unable to twist it. This limitation stemmed from years of wear and tear, beginning with an operation at just 19 to shave down cartilage. A torn meniscus in the 2012-13 season led to a cascade of further injuries, including damage to his hamstring, as his body compensated for the compromised knee.

Thierry Henry’s Profound Admiration

Richards’ candid revelations were met with heartfelt admiration from his CBS punditry colleague, Arsenal legend Thierry Henry. Henry spoke movingly about his respect for Richards’ resilience and his ability to maintain a positive demeanour in the face of immense personal adversity.

Henry shared that he had wanted to express his feelings to Richards privately but felt compelled to do so on air. He drew a parallel to his own career, acknowledging the ten years he played with extreme pain in his Achilles. However, Henry noted a crucial difference: he was able to finish his career on his own terms, a luxury not afforded to Richards. “So I have the utmost respect for you for dealing with that,” Henry stated. “I don’t know how you dealt with that mentally. And yet you’re always sitting here, happy, lifting the spirit of everybody and making everyone happy.”

Henry emphasised that Richards’ contributions are not taken for granted. “We see you. And I have to say that now you are in my hero bracket. And for a very long time. You are my favourite on this show.” This powerful endorsement underscores the significant impact Richards has had, not just as a footballer but as a broadcaster and an individual navigating life’s challenges with remarkable grace and honesty. His willingness to share his story serves as an inspiration, highlighting the importance of mental health awareness and the strength found in vulnerability.
