EIGHT MILE, Ala. – The Mobile County Commission recently hosted its fifth annual Earth Day celebration at Chickasabogue Park. While Earth Day was observed on Wednesday, various organizations and government groups are continuing the tradition with commemorative events throughout the weekend.
The activities held on Saturday in Eight Mile were designed to inspire people to appreciate one of the county’s most expansive outdoor spaces. Attendees enjoyed a variety of entertainment, including music, food, and interactive activities that engaged the community in environmental awareness.
Sharee Broussard, the public affairs director for Mobile County, emphasized the importance of the event. “It’s always important to learn about what’s going on with the planet, and it’s also a good chance for Mobile County to share some of what it’s doing with conservation, restoration, and environmental efforts,” she said.
Several local organizations supported the event, including Keep Mobile Beautiful and the Gulf Coast Resource Conservation and Development Council. These groups played a key role in promoting environmental stewardship and community involvement.
Kris Enzor, president of Keep Mobile Beautiful, highlighted the significance of the event. “It’s an excellent way to see a beautiful county park. Also take part in the celebration of trees and plants and music. We have music and the playground and all the other fun things to do,” she said.
In addition to the festivities, six local teams received Love Your Community grants of $1,500 from Commissioner Connie Hudson. These grants were awarded to support community-based environmental initiatives. The recipients include:
- Loving Litter Pick Up from Bayou La Batre
- Friends of Fowl River from the Fowl River Area Civic Association
- Flo Claire 2 from midtown Mobile
- Trash Busters from the College Wood Civic Association in Eight Mile
- Team Up 2 Clean Up from Trinity Gardens
- Revitalize DIP, continuing support for a “Love Your Community/Keep DIP Clean” billboard on Dauphin Island Parkway
