Mobile Kidney Walk Shatters Fundraising Record, Surpasses $300,000 Milestone
The annual Mobile Kidney Walk has achieved a monumental fundraising success, collecting over $300,000 to benefit the Alabama Kidney Foundation. This significant achievement represents a new record for the event, underscoring the community’s overwhelming support for individuals battling kidney disease in the Mobile area. Organizers reported a notable increase in participation this year, with more walkers, more dedicated teams, and a greater number of sponsoring organizations than ever before.
The funds generated from this year’s walk will be directly channeled into providing essential assistance to kidney patients throughout the Mobile region. This support encompasses a wide range of critical needs, ensuring that those affected by kidney disease can access the care and resources they require to navigate their health challenges.
A Personal Journey of Hope and Gratitude
Among the many dedicated participants was Team Mirian’s Mission, a group led by Mirian Powell, a kidney transplant recipient whose personal journey exemplifies the life-changing impact of organ donation and the importance of the Alabama Kidney Foundation’s work. Powell shared her inspiring story, detailing her experience with at-home dialysis and the arduous eighteen-month wait on the kidney transplant list before receiving a life-saving kidney from the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB).
“I received the call from UAB, and now I’m celebrating one year with my new kidney,” Powell recounted with evident emotion. “It has been truly life-changing. I didn’t fully grasp how ill I was or how poorly I felt until I started to feel better. This new kidney is an incredible blessing. My deepest gratitude goes to the family who selflessly chose to donate their son’s kidney, offering me the chance to live a better life.”
Honoring a Mother’s Legacy Through Advocacy
Powell’s participation in the Mobile Kidney Walk also served as a poignant tribute to her mother, who passed away at the age of 84 due to kidney disease. Her mother’s experience, without the opportunity for a transplant, fuels Powell’s commitment to raising awareness and supporting others.
“I’m walking in her memory because she didn’t have the chance to receive a new kidney,” Powell explained. “I am profoundly thankful that I did. I’ve participated in previous years, and this year’s turnout is the largest I’ve ever witnessed. It’s simply wonderful, and we extend our sincere thanks to everyone for their incredible support.”
Alabama Kidney Foundation: A Vital Lifeline for Thousands
David Reeves, Executive Director of the Alabama Kidney Foundation, highlighted the extensive reach and critical role of the organization in the state. He stated that the foundation provides assistance to over 1,000 individuals each month, addressing a diverse array of needs.
“The impact of these funds is far-reaching,” Reeves emphasized. “We support approximately a thousand people every month with various forms of assistance. This includes financial aid for transportation to dialysis appointments, a crucial element for many patients. Additionally, we offer support for daily living expenses, helping individuals cover costs for medications, rent, utility bills, and a multitude of other essential needs.”
The statistics underscore the pressing nature of kidney disease in Alabama. It is estimated that one in every seven individuals in the state is affected by this serious health condition, making the work of organizations like the Alabama Kidney Foundation even more vital.
