Musa Dents Rivers’ Hopes as Rangers Rise to Top

Enugu Rangers Rise to the Top of Nigeria Premier Football League

Enugu Rangers International have claimed the top spot in the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) following a dramatic weekend in the title race. The shift in the standings was largely influenced by Kano Pillars’ late victory over Rivers United, which proved to be a pivotal moment in the league’s ongoing battle for supremacy.

Rivers United, who had been leading the table, faced a major setback in Kano when they were defeated 2-1 by Kano Pillars in stoppage time. Abdullahi Musa opened the scoring for the hosts in the 81st minute, and it seemed as though the match would end in a draw after Handsome Surveyor equalized for Rivers United in the 89th minute. However, former Super Eagles captain Ahmed Musa delivered a decisive blow deep into stoppage time, securing a crucial win for Kano Pillars.

This result allowed Enugu Rangers to capitalize on Rivers United’s misfortune. In a tightly contested match at the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium, Enugu Rangers edged out Enyimba 2-1 to move to the top of the table with 59 points, just one point ahead of Rivers United. The first half ended goalless, but Wonah Williams gave Enyimba an early lead. The Flying Antelopes quickly responded with goals from defenders Chidozie Iwundu and Ifeanyi Onyebuchi within 10 minutes, turning the game around and securing a vital victory in the title race.

For Nasarawa United, Victor Chimezie, Ngei Oluka-Efor, and Habibu Alakija found the back of the net, while in Ikenne, the defending champions saw Victor Mbaoma, Adedayo Olamilekan, and Samuel Anakwe score for their team.
