The Great Playoff Showdown: NBA vs NHL
When the NFL playoffs are on, they’re king. When the leaves begin to change colors, MLB playoffs take over. But as we go from spring into early summer, the other two North American sports league powerhouses, the NBA and the NHL, have their playoffs at the same time. On one night, you could have two Game 7s in two different sports to choose from.
So, as of 2026, which is the better viewing product? Let’s discuss.
Storytelling/Marketing
In this category, the NBA has a major advantage. Every chirp, post-game quote, or court interaction can go viral. Whereas in the NHL, marketing, which has hamstrung the league before, isn’t always at the forefront. The NHL is getting better at storytelling, but it’s not close to the NBA’s dominance on social media.
Winner: NBA
Spontaneity
Which postseason are you more likely to tune to if you haven’t watched the entire game, but a friend says you need to watch the final minutes?
While the NBA has its advantages when it comes to the likes of Steph Curry raining threes, can anything beat a postseason hockey game in overtime? Overtime playoff hockey is unmatched, and while there’s only one Curry, even a middling NHL playoff series can feel like the most important game of all time if it reaches overtime.
Winner: NHL
Format
Another win for the NBA. While the NBA has tinkered with its system by adding the play-in series and making the quarterfinals a best-of-seven, the changes haven’t been astronomical. The best teams play the worst teams.
In the NHL, however, the seventh-best team in the Eastern Conference, the Pittsburgh Penguins, are set to play the eighth-best team in the Eastern Conference, the Philadelphia Flyers. Yeah, no, NBA wins.
Winner: NBA
The Marathon
Which is better over the long term?
While the NBA is good and gets stronger as the tournament goes on, the NHL is undeniable. You see the change in players from the first postseason game to the Stanley Cup finals. The scratches, the black eyes, the playoff beards that are haggard and unkempt.
NHL teams bring you on an emotional and physical journey through each round, regardless of whether they’re the best team in the league or a scrappy underdog who made it to the end.
Point to the NHL.
Winner: NHL
Overall Winner
Both leagues have their pros and cons. Each has its own charm on its road to the championship trophy. The verdict comes down to one thing: consistency.
At its best, the NBA playoffs might be untouchable, when you go back a decade ago in 2016, when LeBron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers stopped the Golden State Warriors. But that’s not every season. There can, and have been, boring NBA playoffs from nearly start to finish.
Even at its worst, the NHL playoffs have never been boring, regardless of how nonsensical their format might be.
Winner: NHL
