Hollywood, a realm often synonymous with glitz, glamour, and, unfortunately, its fair share of drama, has seen its share of controversies. Even the long-running and immensely popular crime procedural, NCIS, a show that has captivated audiences for decades, hasn’t been immune to its own share of scandals and behind-the-scenes ructions. As with any series that endures for an extended period, the interconnected lives of its cast and crew can sometimes lead to friction, disagreements, and public scrutiny. Here, we delve into some of the most significant controversies to have emerged from the NCIS universe.
Cote de Pablo’s Departure and Blunt Criticism
One of the most significant heartbreaks for NCIS fans was the departure of Cote de Pablo, who portrayed the beloved Agent Ziva David. Her exit in 2013 sent shockwaves through the fanbase, who had grown to adore her complex character and her dynamic on-screen partnerships.
De Pablo didn’t shy away from explaining her reasons for leaving, offering a candid and rather cutting assessment of the show’s creative direction. While she expressed her deep affection for Ziva, stating she had spent eight years meticulously crafting the character and loving her, the actress felt the writing had become subpar and that the character was no longer being treated with the respect she deserved.
“I worked eight years in crafting this character and loving her, so when I felt the character was not being treated with the respect that she deserved, all the money in the world [couldn’t make me stay],” de Pablo reportedly stated. She pointed to “political things and the scripts not being good enough” as the primary drivers for her decision.
Despite her strong criticisms and her initial decision to walk away, the pull of the character and perhaps a change in circumstances led to de Pablo’s eventual return to NCIS in 2020, much to the delight of her devoted followers.
The Pauley Perrette and Mark Harmon Dispute
Few NCIS scandals have generated as much discussion and concern as the incident involving Pauley Perrette and Mark Harmon. Perrette, who played the quirky and brilliant forensic scientist Abby Sciuto for an impressive 15 seasons, was a cornerstone of the show. However, her departure was reportedly marred by a significant dispute with her co-star, Mark Harmon.
Perrette has publicly stated that she felt “terrified” of Harmon on set. The crux of the issue, according to Perrette, stemmed from an alleged incident where Harmon’s dog bit a crew member. Perrette claimed she confronted Harmon about the incident, and shortly thereafter, she experienced what she described as a “physical assault” on set. This confrontation and its aftermath ultimately led to her decision to leave NCIS.
While the specifics of the alleged assault were never officially verified in the public domain, the network at the time issued a statement indicating that they had investigated Perrette’s complaints and that the matter had been “resolved to everyone’s satisfaction.” Regardless of the precise details, the fallout from this incident meant that Perrette never returned to the show, marking a somber end to her tenure. It was undoubtedly a difficult period for the cast and crew, leaving a lasting impression on the show’s history.
Michael Weatherly’s Allegations and NCIS Cast Support
Michael Weatherly, a fan-favourite for his portrayal of the charismatic and often impulsive Tony DiNozzo, departed NCIS in 2016 to pursue other projects, most notably the legal drama Bull. However, his transition was not without its own significant controversy.
Shortly after joining Bull, Weatherly found himself at the centre of a scandal when his co-star, Eliza Dushku, accused him of sexual harassment and bullying. Dushku alleged that Weatherly made inappropriate comments and engaged in behaviour that created a hostile work environment. The situation escalated when Dushku reportedly complained about his conduct, only to be subsequently fired from the show.
The scandal gained considerable traction when it was revealed that the network had paid Dushku a substantial sum, reportedly close to $10 million, in a settlement that included a clause for her silence regarding the allegations and her termination.
Interestingly, during this difficult period for Weatherly, several of his former NCIS colleagues publicly rallied to his defence. Pauley Perrette, despite her own past issues with the show, expressed her unwavering support for Weatherly, calling him a man she “love[s], respect[s], trust[s], and I KNOW. TWO decades of friendship and respect.”
Sasha Alexander, who played Agent Caitlin Todd, also shared a warm message for Weatherly, reminiscing about their time together on NCIS. She described their on-screen dynamic as “always laughs” and referred to him as a “true friend” with “a heart as big as they come.”
On Bull, Weatherly faced accusations of making rape jokes, engaging in sexually inappropriate commentary, and perpetuating a bullying atmosphere. He later issued an apology, though he maintained that his behaviour was an “attempt at humor.” The dual nature of his career trajectory – a beloved figure on NCIS and a controversial figure on Bull – highlighted the complexities and often challenging realities of working within the entertainment industry.
