Liam Neeson’s Son Undergoes Major Heart Surgery, Actor Faces Parental Fears
Hollywood actor Liam Neeson, renowned for his intense roles in films like Taken and Schindler’s List, is reportedly navigating one of the most challenging periods of his life as a parent. His 29-year-old son, Daniel Neeson, has recently undergone significant surgery to address a rare congenital heart condition. The actor has been a steadfast presence, offering close support to Daniel throughout his recovery process at Weill Cornell / NewYork-Presbyterian hospital in New York.
Daniel, an entrepreneur and co-founder of the spirits brand De Nada Tequila, bravely shared details of his health journey on social media. He revealed that he was born with Bicuspid Aortic Valve (BAV), a relatively common congenital heart defect affecting approximately 2% of the population. In this condition, the aortic valve, which controls blood flow from the heart to the rest of the body, has only two leaflets instead of the usual three. While often dormant for many years, BAV can eventually lead to serious complications such as valve failure or an enlargement of the aorta.
A Lifelong Monitoring and Unexpected Intervention
Daniel explained that he had been under the care of cardiologists for most of his life, undergoing regular check-ups to monitor his heart’s condition. This lifelong vigilance became crucial when doctors detected severe dilation of his left ventricle and an enlargement of his aorta.
“I was born with BAV (Bicuspid Aortic Valve) – a condition where the aortic valve has two leaflets instead of the normal three,” Daniel wrote in a candid Instagram post. “About 2 per cent of the human population has it, and most people don’t even know. It can stay dormant for years before it begins causing valve failure or enlargement of the aorta.”

He elaborated on the progression of his condition: “For me, I had biannual cardiology check-ups for most of my life, monitoring my heart. Eventually, I started to experience severe left ventricle dilation and aortic enlargement. I knew it was heading toward medical intervention. Some people with BAV are operated on later in life, but I drew the early-bird straw.”
Embracing Surrender and Trust Through Surgery
The entrepreneurial spirit that drives Daniel also shaped his approach to his medical ordeal. He described the surgery as both an emotional and physical challenge, one that necessitated a profound shift from his usual inclination to control his environment.
“I’ve always prided myself on pushing through battles and working to control my environment,” Daniel shared. “This was different. This required surrender. Presence. Letting go. Trusting world-class surgeons and unbelievable nurses. Trusting the universe. Trusting that even if I couldn’t control the outcome, I could control my mindset and my deeper consciousness.”

He viewed the operation not merely as a medical procedure but as a deeply personal ceremony focused on healing. “Overcoming this wasn’t about being fearless. It was about leaning into the healing energy and being as present as possible. I looked at this operation as a ceremony, not a procedure,” he added.
Echoes of Past Trauma for Liam Neeson
For Liam Neeson, his son’s health crisis has undoubtedly brought back deeply painful memories. The actor experienced the devastating loss of his wife, Natasha Richardson, in 2009. Richardson tragically passed away at the age of 45 following a head injury sustained in a skiing accident in Quebec, Canada. At the time of her death, Daniel was just 12 years old.
Sources close to the family have indicated that witnessing Daniel undergo major heart surgery has been profoundly distressing for Liam. “Watching his son go through major heart surgery has been deeply frightening for Liam,” a source revealed. “It has brought back painful memories of losing Natasha and the helplessness he felt during that time.”

The insider continued, “Liam is a very strong man, but the thought of anything happening to one of his boys terrifies him. Seeing Daniel in the hospital triggered a lot of emotion because it reminded him of how suddenly life can change.”
A Protective Father’s Vigil
Despite his own deep-seated fears, Liam has maintained a constant and attentive presence throughout Daniel’s recovery. Another insider noted the actor’s unwavering support.
“Liam has been incredibly protective and attentive throughout the whole ordeal,” the source stated. “Even though Daniel has approached the experience with calm and optimism, Liam has been quietly dealing with a huge amount of fear. For Liam, it is impossible not to think back to what happened with Natasha. That loss still sits very close to the surface, so a health scare involving his son naturally shakes him deeply.”

Daniel’s recovery marks a significant milestone, occurring just six months after he became engaged to his longtime partner, Natalie Ackerman. The couple announced their engagement following a romantic boat trip on the Hudson River, culminating eight years of their relationship.
Gratitude and Family Support
In his heartfelt social media update, Daniel extended his profound gratitude to the medical professionals who cared for him. He specifically thanked Dr. Leonard Girardi and the entire ICU team at Weill Cornell / NewYork-Presbyterian, praising their exceptional care.
“I am forever grateful to Dr. Leonard Girardi and his remarkable team at Weill Cornell / NewYork-Presbyterian for taking unbelievable care of me,” Daniel expressed. “To the ICU team and nurses – truly some of the greatest people on the planet – thank you. They deserve all the praise in the world.”
He also acknowledged the unwavering support of his fiancée, Natalie, and his family. “Thank you to my rock @natalieack and to my family for being there every day,” he added.
Daniel’s older brother, Micheál Richardson, 30, has also followed in his father’s footsteps, forging a career for himself as an actor. The family, while navigating this significant health challenge, has demonstrated remarkable strength and unity.
