Mitsubishi is on the verge of reintroducing one of its most iconic four-wheel drive models. The Japanese automaker has confirmed that its new large off-roader, likely to be named Pajero, will be unveiled this year, with an Australian launch expected in 2026. This development signals a significant move for Mitsubishi as it prepares to compete against some of the biggest names in the 4WD market.
A Range of Options
According to recent reports from Best Car magazine, which is well-known for its reliable sources within the Japanese car industry, the new Pajero will feature a three-grade lineup. This suggests that there will be different versions of the vehicle to cater to various consumer needs and preferences. The base and mid-tier models are expected to carry the GLX and either GLS or GSR designations, similar to those used in the Triton model, which shares the same underpinnings. The top-of-the-line version may take on the Exceed name, a nod to previous generations of the Pajero.
Launch Timing and Competition
The Australian launch of the new Pajero is set for 2026, coinciding with the arrival of other competitive models such as the Toyota LandCruiser Prado, Nissan Patrol, and Denza B5 4WDs. This timing positions the Pajero to enter a market that is ripe for new contenders, especially as consumers seek vehicles that offer both off-road capability and on-road comfort.
Design and Features
Mitsubishi has not officially confirmed any details about the Pajero, including its name, except for the announcement that the vehicle will debut this year. However, camouflaged versions have been spotted testing in Australia, with some sightings reported by CarsGuide earlier this year in Western Victoria. These tests provide a glimpse into what the new Pajero might look like, featuring a blocky design reminiscent of the new Nissan Patrol. The vehicle is expected to have a large grille, vertical tiered headlights, and bonnet bulges, giving it a rugged and robust appearance.
President’s Vision
Mitsubishi’s President, Keisuke Kishiura, shared his vision for the new Pajero with the US outlet Automotive News. He described it as a cross-country SUV that combines fully-fledged off-road capability with the ease of handling and comfort of a passenger car. “We plan to launch the new cross-country SUV within the year,” he stated, indicating the company’s commitment to bringing this model to market soon.
Engineering and Performance
It is believed that the new Pajero will be based on the Triton platform, which includes a proper ladder frame that provides genuine off-road ability. To ensure it performs well on roads, the vehicle is expected to have an adaptable suspension system. In terms of power, the Pajero is anticipated to use a version of the 2.4-litre bi-turbo-diesel engine. This engine could potentially deliver more power than the 150kW and 470Nm found in the Australian-specification Triton.
Design Details
The camouflaged vehicles give us a clue at what the new Pajero will look like, with big blocky styling similar to the new Nissan Patrol.
