NIS Stops Six Trafficked Individuals at Niger Border

Human Trafficking Foiled in Jigawa State

A significant operation by the Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS) in Jigawa State has led to the interception of six suspected human trafficking victims at the Babura Plantation Border Patrol Base. The individuals were reportedly attempting to be smuggled to Europe via Libya and Niger Republic, highlighting the ongoing challenges posed by human trafficking networks.

The NAPTIP Command in Jigawa State recently issued a warning to residents about criminals exploiting innocent people during festive periods. These individuals are often lured with false promises of better opportunities abroad, which frequently result in them becoming victims of human trafficking.

According to reports, the suspects were trying to cross the border undetected, but the vigilant NIS officers managed to stop their plans. The intercepted individuals included four females aged 18-23 and two males aged 32-36, who hail from various states including Ogun, Ondo, Imo, Lagos, and Enugu.

Mr Abdulkadir Turajo, the NAPTIP Jigawa State Commander, received the intercepted individuals from the NIS on Tuesday in Dutse, the state capital. He mentioned that the victims were caught while attempting to cross the border and that efforts are underway to identify the traffickers involved.

Turajo pledged a thorough investigation and prosecution of those responsible for the trafficking attempt. He also assured the media that the victims would receive all necessary support and care, emphasizing that justice would be served for the culprits.

Despite these efforts, the NAPTIP commander warned the public to remain vigilant, as traffickers often exploit the festive season to lure unsuspecting individuals. He advised citizens to verify offers and stay safe, urging them not to fall for false promises.

“The festive season must not become a trafficking season,” Turajo emphasized, calling on citizens to be cautious and report any suspicious activities. His message was clear: vigilance can save lives.

The NAPTIP commander also commended the efforts of the NIS, Jigawa State Command under the leadership of its State Commandant, CIS T. A. Musa, in combating trafficking. He noted that the collaboration between NIS and NAPTIP has significantly strengthened their efforts to combat human trafficking.

Turajo expressed his gratitude to the NIS for their relentless efforts, stating, “I commend the NIS Jigawa State Command under CIS Musa’s leadership for their dedication to fighting human trafficking.” He promised continued vigilance and cooperation with other agencies.

Regarding the suspects, Mr Turajo explained that the victims will receive support and care from NAPTIP, with plans for rehabilitation and reintegration. He added that the organization is working to restore the dignity and confidence of the victims.

He further highlighted that traffickers target vulnerable individuals with false promises, often exploiting their desperation. These victims were lured with promises of better lives, only to face uncertainty and danger.

The NAPTIP commander urged citizens to report any suspicious activities, reinforcing the importance of community involvement in preventing human trafficking.

Earlier, the NIS boss in Jigawa State, T. A. Musa, stated, “We are committed to securing our borders and protecting Nigerians from human trafficking. I’m pleased to hand over these suspects to NAPTIP for further investigation and prosecution.”

Musa also emphasized the NIS’s determination to prevent such attempts, saying, “The suspects were attempting to exploit the festive season to smuggle these individuals to Europe. We won’t let them succeed.”

CIS T.A. Musa concluded by praising the efforts of his officers, stating, “I commend our officers for their vigilance and dedication. We’ll continue to work with NAPTIP to combat human trafficking in Jigawa State.”

Efforts by the Arewa PUNCH Correspondent to interview the suspected trafficked persons were unsuccessful, as they are currently undergoing security interrogation by NAPTIP officials. These officials are handling the case and preparing for the victims’ eventual reintegration into their families.
