A Family’s Resilience: TLC Stars Speak Out After Tragic Accident Claims Three Lives
The close-knit Putman family, stars of the TLC reality series that documented their multi-generational household, are bravely sharing their story following a devastating traffic accident that claimed the lives of three beloved family members. The incident, which occurred last September, sent shockwaves through the family and their devoted fanbase.
The Putmans, known for their heartwarming dynamic on the show, were embarking on what was meant to be a joyous occasion. Brothers Blake, Billy, and Brandon Putman, along with their spouses, children, and parents, made a two-hour trek to support 15-year-old Noah Putman at a pivotal football game. While Noah delivered an exceptional performance, hailed by his father Blake as “the best football game he’s ever played,” the celebratory mood was shattered by a horrific collision.
A truck, reportedly running a stop sign, violently impacted one of the three vehicles carrying eight members of the Putman family. Blake Putman, who was driving the car that was struck, recounted the harrowing moments to PEOPLE magazine. The crash resulted in the tragic loss of his wife of 18 years, Megan, 37, and his parents, Bill and Barb, both 65.
“I remember the entire thing: I remember the car hitting us. I remember being on the road. I remember a lot of scenes inside the vehicle,” Blake shared, his voice heavy with emotion. He described the devastating final moments, noting that Megan had her arms around him at the impact, while his father was asleep. Tragically, his wife and parents “died on the scene. The autopsy said that they were immediately gone. There was no saving them.”
Despite the immense personal devastation, Blake himself survived the crash, albeit with severe injuries. He was hospitalised alongside his children Lulu, Alena, and Noah, as well as his niece Gia. The injuries sustained were significant: Lulu suffered a pelvic fracture, Alena a clavicle fracture, and both Noah and Gia were left with traumatic brain injuries.
Blake’s brother, Brandon Putman, 39, expressed his profound relief and amazement at the recovery of his son, Noah, and niece, Gia. “I remember pulling Noah out of the car, and I didn’t think he’d be the same as he is,” Brandon admitted. “The way he’s bounced back and is stronger in almost every facet than he was before in a short amount of time is amazing. Gia, the same thing.”
Brandon and his wife, Kacie, were travelling in a separate vehicle behind the others with Gia. They witnessed the entire tragic incident unfold. Following the crash, Noah spent two weeks in the Intensive Care Unit and two months in rehabilitation. Gia required an emergency airlift to a hospital and has undergone extensive treatment, including 10 brain surgeries, and remains in recovery.
Remarkably, Noah is already demonstrating incredible strength and determination. He has resumed weightlifting and is eager to return to school sports, including football and wrestling, a testament to his resilience.
While the Putman family is slowly beginning to heal from the physical and emotional wounds, the weight of their loss is undeniable. However, their strong family bonds are proving to be a crucial source of support. “But this family, we circle each other, and when one person’s weak, we pick them up,” Blake stated, highlighting their unwavering solidarity.
In the immediate aftermath of the tragedy, the family shared a heartfelt statement on Instagram, informing fans about the devastating news. “I come to you with a heavy heart, asking for your prayers. Our family was in a tragic car accident and we lost Papa, Neenee and Aunt Megan,” the post read, referring to grandparents Bill and Barb, and their daughter-in-law Megan.
The statement continued with a message of faith and hope: “They have gone home to be with the Lord. We know Papa, Neenee and Aunt Megan are not gone forever. They are alive and whole in Heaven, standing before Jesus, hearing the words we all long to hear: ‘Well done, my good and faithful servant.'”
The Putman family first captured the hearts of viewers in 2017 with their TLC reality show, which showcased the lives of Bill and Barb Putman and their sprawling family of 25, all living harmoniously under one roof. The series was later revived and retitled Growing Up Putman for a YouTube release in 2021, further endearing them to audiences. Despite the profound loss they have endured, the Putman family’s spirit of unity and their ongoing journey of recovery continue to inspire.
