Olympic Champ Udo-Obong Launches N5m Athletics Grant

Nigerian Athletics Gets a Boost: N5 Million Grant to Revolutionise Grassroots Development

A significant initiative aimed at revitalising grassroots athletics across Nigeria has been launched by former Olympic champion Enefiok Udo-Obong. Through his Udo-Obong Athletics Academy, a substantial N5 million grant has been earmarked to support promising athletics clubs nationwide. This programme is set to inject vital resources into the foundational levels of the sport, empowering clubs and coaches who are the bedrock of athlete development.

The grant scheme, confirmed by the Udo-Obong Athletics Academy, is strategically designed to bolster grassroots athletics and enhance athlete performance on a national scale. Applications are now open to eligible athletics clubs from all corners of Nigeria, signalling a commitment to a truly inclusive approach.

The Vision Behind the Initiative

Enefiok Udo-Obong, who also serves as the Technical Adviser to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia Athletics Development Programme, articulated the driving force behind this philanthropic endeavour. His decision stems from a profound desire to acknowledge and support the tireless efforts of clubs and coaches who, often with limited resources, dedicate themselves to nurturing athletic talent.

“I felt that if I worked through my foundation, the Udo-Obong Athletics Academy, I would be able to raise funds to support those who are doing very well,” Udo-Obong explained. “In truth, the people who operate athletics clubs are the ones actually responsible for the development of athletes, yet I feel these individuals and clubs do not receive enough recognition or support.”

This sentiment highlights a critical gap in the Nigerian sporting landscape, where the crucial role of grassroots organisations is frequently understated. The grant seeks to rectify this by providing tangible financial assistance directly to those on the front lines of athlete cultivation.

Addressing Key Challenges in Grassroots Athletics

Beyond mere financial support, the grant is specifically targeted at alleviating one of the most persistent hurdles faced by grassroots athletics: the limited access clubs have to competitive opportunities for their athletes. Udo-Obong, a two-time Olympic medallist himself, understands the frustration of athletes and coaches who dedicate months, even years, to training, only to be hampered by logistical and financial barriers when it comes to participating in competitions.

“There are many clubs and coaches who establish their own teams to develop athletes. One of the key challenges I believe this grant should address is access to competitions for athletes,” he stated.

The geographical disparities in competition scheduling often present insurmountable obstacles. Athletes training diligently in regions like Kaduna, Gombe, or Jos may find it exceedingly difficult to travel to major events held in Lagos, Delta, or Abuja. The sheer distance and associated costs can effectively exclude talented individuals from showcasing their abilities on a larger stage.

“In many cases, athletes train consistently for a long period, whether in places like Kaduna, Gombe or Jos, only for competitions to be scheduled in Lagos, Delta or Abuja. It then becomes very difficult for these clubs to take their athletes to compete, and many are unable to attend because the distance is too far,” Udo-Obong elaborated.

While acknowledging that hosting events in every locality is not always feasible, Udo-Obong stressed that the lack of mobility has led to the unfortunate overlooking of countless promising athletes. This initiative aims to be a catalyst for change, enabling these athletes to bridge the geographical divide.

“That is why we hope the grant will be used to support transportation, enabling athletes to travel to competitions where they can showcase their abilities. Many talents have been lost simply because they were unable to compete, and we hope this initiative will help to bridge that gap,” he added.

Grant Allocation and Application Process

The N5 million grant will be distributed among five selected athletics clubs, with each recipient club receiving N1 million. To be eligible for this transformative funding, clubs are required to meet specific criteria:

  • Active Participation: Demonstrable involvement in recognised athletics competitions.
  • Athlete Registration: A minimum number of registered athletes participating across various athletics disciplines.
  • Qualified Coaching Staff: The presence of at least one qualified coach within the club.

Interested clubs are invited to submit their applications via email to [email protected]. The deadline for submissions is January 31, 2026. Following a rigorous verification process, only shortlisted clubs will be contacted.

A Legacy of Excellence

Enefiok Udo-Obong’s commitment to the sport extends beyond his playing career. As a former Nigerian sprinter, he is celebrated for his pivotal role in securing a gold medal in the 4x400m relay at the Sydney 2000 Olympics and a bronze in the same event at the Athens 2004 Games. His national achievements include being a three-time national 400m champion and a six-time medallist at the prestigious National Sports Festival. This grant represents a continuation of his dedication to the sport, aiming to foster the next generation of Nigerian athletic stars.
