This year’s event was marked by controversy, with Blake Lively making a striking appearance just hours after settling her lawsuit against Justin Baldoni. Her presence at the gala, alongside her male assistants, only serves to highlight her perceived delusion, entitlement, and detachment from reality.
Anna Wintour, the influential editor-in-chief of Vogue, allowed Lively to attend the event without her husband, Ryan Reynolds. This decision speaks volumes about the current state of affairs within the elite circles of the entertainment industry. The Met Gala, it seems, has become more than just a fashion event—it’s now a gathering of some of the most controversial figures in the world, funded by Jeff Bezos. However, Bezos did not walk the red carpet with his wife, Lauren Sanchez, which adds another layer of irony to the situation.
Despite Wintour’s efforts, she could not convince Meryl Streep or Catherine, Princess of Wales, to attend. Instead, the event featured a lineup of celebrities who have faced their own share of scrutiny. Katy Perry, currently accused of sexual assault by Ruby Rose, Sarah Paulson, who wore a dollar bill mask as a form of protest, Lena Dunham, who has been criticized for false rape accusations, and Amy Griffin, who is facing legal action over her memoir, were all present. Additionally, 14-year-old Blue Ivy Carter, who ignored her father Jay-Z’s requests to remove her sunglasses, and Jay-Z himself, who has been a long-time friend of Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs, made appearances. The Kardashians, often seen as representatives of the worst of pop culture, rounded out the list of attendees.
Harsh Criticism of Blake Lively’s Conduct During the Legal Battle
For Blake Lively to stand out among such a group is quite an achievement. According to reports, even her husband, Ryan Reynolds, had grown tired of her insistence on not settling the case, despite the federal judge urging them to do so multiple times. Although the judge recently dismissed the bulk of Lively’s case, the sexual harassment claims against Baldoni remain. Reynolds reportedly believed that settling was the best course of action, stating that it was “bad for her [and] bad for their careers.”
This narrative, however, appears convenient given Reynolds’ involvement in the battle. He was heavily involved in Lively’s accusations against Baldoni, including emails and texts where he described Baldoni as a “malignantly vein [sic], sociopathic FAUXminist.” These messages, along with others, have further fueled the public’s criticism of Lively and her actions.
Private Texts Deepening the Public Fallout
Court filings also revealed private texts between Lively and Taylor Swift, who had been present during a meeting between Lively, Reynolds, and Baldoni. In one text, Lively asked Swift to act as if she was “freaking out” over a script rewrite. Swift responded with enthusiasm, showing her support for Lively. After the meeting, Lively praised Swift for her role in the events, calling her “epically heroic.”
However, once these texts became public, Swift distanced herself from Lively. Reports suggest that Lively, who named Swift as godmother to three of her children, will not be invited to Swift’s upcoming wedding in New York City. This move highlights the extent of the fallout from Lively’s actions.
Ryan Reynolds Avoiding the Spotlight Amid the Controversy
Ryan Reynolds chose to stay home from the Met Gala, a decision that may have been wise given the ongoing controversy. Dressing for the Met Gala requires months of planning, including meetings with top designers, securing the best hair and makeup artists, and preparing for press interviews. Reynolds, however, opted to avoid the spotlight, though he is not entirely free from the repercussions of the scandal.
During the lawsuit, it was reported that Paramount had dropped several of Reynolds’ projects. Additionally, on my podcast, The Nerve, we revisited a story that Reynolds likely hoped would remain forgotten: his teenage act of setting fire to his elementary school, which resulted in the building being destroyed. He later joked about hoping someone was not in prison for what he had done.
As the situation continues to unfold, it seems that both Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds are facing significant challenges. For Lively, the damage to her reputation may be irreversible. What director would want to work with someone who has been accused of bullying and spreading misinformation?
