Origin Axe Looms for $800k Star: Johns’ Stark Warning

Origin Selection Dilemma: Crichton Faces Tough Challenge for NSW Blues Spot

The State of Origin arena is a battleground where reputations are forged and careers are defined. As the National Rugby League (NRL) season unfolds, the perennial question of who will don the coveted sky blue for New South Wales resurfaces with fierce intensity. This year, the selection committee faces a significant conundrum, particularly in the second-row positions, with NRL legend Andrew Johns highlighting the precarious situation of incumbent Angus Crichton.

Johns, a revered figure in the game, has openly voiced his concerns that Crichton is facing serious pressure to retain his spot in the NSW Blues lineup. The emergence of Hudson Young as a standout performer, coupled with the strong early-season form of Jacob Preston, has placed both Crichton and fellow incumbent Liam Martin under immense scrutiny.

Last season, the Blues opted for the formidable pairing of Liam Martin and Angus Crichton in the back-row. However, the current landscape suggests that their places are far from guaranteed. Young and Preston have been lighting up the opening rounds of the NRL season, demonstrating the kind of form that selectors simply cannot overlook.

Young and Preston: The New Contenders

The recent clash between Hudson Young and Jacob Preston provided a compelling preview of the talent vying for Origin selection. Both players were instrumental in their respective teams’ performances, arguably standing out as two of the best on the field.

  • Hudson Young’s Impact: Young was a constant threat throughout the match. He showcased his all-around game by running for an impressive 130 metres, breaking the line once, and contributing a crucial try assist. His involvement was high, and he consistently made his presence felt.

  • Jacob Preston’s Flair: While perhaps not as involved statistically as Young, Preston delivered a game-changing performance. He scored a try and registered a linebreak, demonstrating his ability to crack open a defence and create opportunities, particularly on the right edge. His attacking prowess is undeniable.

Crichton’s Challenging Start to the Season

Despite a successful international campaign with the Kangaroos during the recent Ashes tour, Angus Crichton has struggled to replicate that form for his club, the Sydney Roosters. The club has endured a difficult start to the season, conceding over 40 points in two of their opening three rounds. This collective struggle has, unfortunately, cast a shadow over Crichton’s individual performances.

Andrew Johns believes that Young’s current form is becoming increasingly difficult for the NSW selectors to ignore. Speaking on Channel Nine, Johns suggested that coach Laurie Daley might consider shifting Young to the left edge. The fact that Crichton is also slated to depart for rugby union at the end of the season could also influence the selection decision, potentially making it an easier call for the coaching staff.

“Hudson Young, he’s up against Angus Crichton,” Johns stated. “Now Crichton is a bit of a by-product of the Roosters…they have been struggling this year. Angus hasn’t been great. Whether they go with Angus, or whether they are thinking Angus is going to rugby union next year. But the way Hudson Young is playing, it’s hard to ignore.”

Preston’s Potential Role and Martin’s Position

Johns also weighed in on the potential roles for both Young and Preston in the upcoming Origin series. He anticipates that Preston might find a place on the extended bench in 2026, while Young is more likely to secure a starting spot this year.

“I think he will be on the bench,” Johns commented on Preston. “And I think they may go with Hudson Young this year. He has got X-factor…I think he will be a starting left back-rower.”

Crichton’s inconsistent start to the season has been surprising, especially given the expectation that he would benefit from playing outside a fit Sam Walker. He will have another opportunity to impress the selectors this week when the Roosters face the Manly Sea Eagles.

While Johns is pointing to Crichton as being in danger of losing his starting spot, there’s also a sentiment that Liam Martin could be vulnerable to making way for Jacob Preston. Preston brings a different skill set to the table, with his strong line-running offering a fresh attacking dimension that could complement the NSW side. Martin’s renowned defensive capabilities have been a cornerstone of NSW’s success in recent years. However, the team’s recent string of defeats suggests that Daley may be compelled to explore different personnel and strategies.

Martin recently returned from a calf injury to play his first game for the Penrith Panthers. This weekend, the Panthers are scheduled to face a battered Parramatta Eels side. The Eels secured a 30-20 victory over the Dragons, but the win came at a significant cost, with J’Maine Hopgood ruled out for the season after suffering an ACL tear.
