Governor of Abia State Assures Corps Members of Employment Opportunities
Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, has made a significant promise to the members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) who serve in the state. He assured them that those who demonstrate exceptional performance during their service year will automatically be offered employment. This commitment was made during the swearing-in ceremony for the 2026 Batch ‘A’ Stream II corps members, which took place at the NYSC Permanent Orientation Camp in Umunna, Bende Local Government Area.
The event was represented by Mrs. Jane Igwe, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Sports and Youth Development. In her address, she emphasized that this gesture is part of the state’s efforts to recognize excellence and enhance human capital development. Governor Otti highlighted that Abia State has a long-standing tradition of providing automatic employment to outstanding corps members, and he assured the new batch that their contributions would not go unnoticed.
He stated, “Our State has a long tradition of offering automatic employment to corps members who excel in their service year. Your case will not be different.” The governor also reiterated his administration’s commitment to building a state that attracts and retains talent, noting that human capital remains one of Abia’s greatest assets.
“Something I can immediately assure you is that this government shall do everything within our powers to make your time in the state meaningful,” he said. This statement reflects the administration’s focus on creating a positive and impactful experience for all corps members serving in the state.
Emphasis on Discipline and Safety
Governor Otti also urged the corps members to avoid indiscipline and reckless behavior, warning that such actions could have long-term consequences on their future. He emphasized the importance of maintaining law-abiding conduct throughout their service year.
“As a government, we shall regularly support the NYSC team to effectively cater for the well-being of every corps member posted to Abia,” he said. This statement highlights the administration’s role in ensuring the safety and welfare of all participants.
Otti further cautioned the corps members against “reckless behaviour, indiscipline and bad choices,” stressing the need for them to remain focused and law-abiding. He warned that the long-term harm caused by such actions may be irreversible.
He described Abia as a safe destination for national service, urging corps members not to entertain fear or seek special postings elsewhere. “Abia is one of the safest destinations in Nigeria. You are therefore encouraged not to entertain any anxiety or lobby to be posted to any special place,” he said.
Contributions from Other Officials
In addition to the governor’s remarks, Sir Nwaobilor Ananaba, the Commissioner for Sports and Youth Development and Chairman of the NYSC State Governing Board, emphasized the government’s value on excellence and community development. His comments reinforced the importance of the NYSC program in fostering growth and leadership among young people.
The NYSC State Coordinator, Yunusa Tanimu, shared details about the orientation course, revealing that 1,743 corps members had registered, including 753 males and 990 females. He expressed gratitude to the state government for its support, particularly in improving camp facilities, enhancing security, and relocating the NYSC secretariat in Umuahia to a more conducive environment.
However, Tanimu also appealed for further intervention, including the provision of a functional ambulance, rehabilitation of camp facilities, and upgrading the camp clinic to meet the health needs of corps members.
Oath of Allegiance Administered
The oath of allegiance was administered by the Chief Judge of Abia State, Lilian Abai, represented by Hon Justice Collington Okoroafor. This final step marked the official commencement of the service year for the newly sworn-in corps members.
