Ottley: ‘Invincible’ Animation Fuels Comic Boom

Invincible’s Animated Surge: How the Hit Show is Rekindling Comic Book Popularity

The electrifying world of Invincible, the animated superhero series, has captivated audiences once again, with its highly anticipated fourth season drawing in a massive and ever-growing fanbase. This renewed enthusiasm isn’t just confined to the screen; it’s spilling over into the original comic books, significantly boosting their sales and sparking a lively debate within the fandom.

The core of the discussion revolves around whether the Invincible comics were already a powerhouse before the animated series exploded onto the scene. Recently, the series’ artist and writer, Ryan Ottley, weighed in on this trending conversation, offering his unique perspective on the phenomenon.

The Comic Book Comeback: A Creator’s Insight

The debate ignited on social media when one user suggested that the Invincible comics achieved widespread fame through fan efforts, paving the way for the animated adaptation. This was met with a counter-argument from another user, who posited that the comics lacked a substantial following even as the show garnered immense popularity.

Responding to this back-and-forth, Ryan Ottley shed light on the current success of the Invincible comics. He explained that in the past, the comic book landscape was heavily dominated by established publishers like Marvel, making it a challenge for newer superhero properties to gain traction. However, Ottley highlighted a significant shift: the animated series has successfully converted casual viewers, particularly those with an affinity for manga and anime, into dedicated comic book enthusiasts.

“And they are watching the show, and getting the books. It’s amazing to see!” Ottley shared on X. “Nothing harder than bringing new readers outside of comic fandom into our world of comics!”

He further elaborated on the difficulty of expanding the comic book audience, noting, “Comic industry mainly has sold to its inside readers for decades. So hitting a new giant group of readers is phenomenal. And almost impossible.”

While it’s not unheard of for animated series to drive sales of their source material, the sheer scale of Invincible‘s success is proving to be exceptional. According to FlixPatrol, the show currently holds the top spot as the most-watched series globally on Prime Video, including within the United States.

Charting the Future: More Seasons on the Horizon

Fueled by this incredible momentum, writer and creator Robert Kirkman has expressed his ambition for the animated series to continue for an extended run. Following the intense confrontation with Conquest in the previous season, the narrative is now hurtling towards the monumental Viltrumite War in Invincible Season 4.

Kirkman envisions a comprehensive adaptation of Mark Grayson’s story, suggesting that approximately seven to eight seasons would be necessary to do justice to the source material. In an interview with Polygon, he stated, “I’m trying not to pin it down to a number, because it is somewhat of a moving target. I think in the seven-to-eight-season range seems like it would be enough.”

Beyond adapting the existing comic storylines, Kirkman also harbours a desire to introduce original narrative elements that couldn’t be incorporated into the comics. This promises to deliver fresh revelations and exciting new plotlines, even for long-time fans who are intimately familiar with the comic books. With a blend of beloved arcs and innovative storytelling on the horizon, Invincible is undoubtedly poised to continue attracting and retaining both its established and newly acquired audience.
