“Out with the dangerous act”: Joey and JT urge Storm lock to stop reckless behavior

Andrew Johns Calls for Tackle Technique Reform

Andrew Johns has raised concerns about the current tackle techniques used in rugby league, following an incident involving Trent Loiero during a match between Melbourne and Penrith. The situation unfolded early in the first half at CommBank Stadium when Dylan Edwards attempted to pass the ball through the middle of the field. Loiero, who was playing as a lock, tackled Edwards from below, causing the player to fall to the ground.

The replay highlighted a hip-drop style tackle by Loiero, which resulted in him being placed on report. This incident sparked a discussion among the Nine commentators, including Billy Slater and Johnathan Thurston, who were questioned by Johns about why such tackles continue to happen. Neither of them could provide a clear answer, citing their own careers in the backline where they rarely made tackles in the middle of the field.

“It’s unfortunate, we definitely need to get it out of the game and there needs to be better technique around those tackles,” Thurston said.

Johns expressed his frustration further, stating, “I just don’t understand how it keeps happening. Change your technique.”

On Saturday morning, Loiero received a grade one dangerous tackle charge. He was fortunate to avoid a ban, with options to either pay a $3,000 fine if he takes the early plea or miss two games if he chooses to fight the charge at the judiciary and loses.

The hip-drop tackle has become a significant topic of discussion in recent years as the pace of the game increases. This season, Ryan Couchman was suspended for four matches after a tackle that ended J’maine Hopgood’s season. Similarly, Mitch Kenny received a one-game ban for a tackle that injured Isaiah Iongi.

In the aftermath of Kenny’s suspension, Panthers coach Ivan Cleary explained that there had been a shift in how hip-drops are interpreted.

“It actually isn’t a hip-drop; it’s dangerous contact. What once was a hip-drop is now dangerous contact, that’s been brought into that context,” Cleary stated.

He added, “It’s just an eye for an eye – Izzy got injured, Mitch landed on the back of his leg.”

This change in interpretation highlights the evolving nature of rugby league rules and the importance of adapting tackle techniques to ensure player safety. As the sport continues to evolve, it is crucial for players and coaches to prioritize proper technique and awareness to prevent dangerous incidents on the field.
