Owensboro Parks Launch Urban Canopy Project

Owensboro, Kentucky (WFIE) – Leaders of Owensboro Parks have launched a new initiative aimed at expanding the city’s urban tree canopy. This project is part of a broader effort to invest in healthier neighborhoods and create safe, welcoming spaces for residents.

City engineers explain that planting canopy trees will help increase the ground’s ability to hold water while reducing the amount of polluted rainwater that reaches local waterways. This approach not only benefits the environment but also contributes to the overall well-being of the community.

Through a grant of over $84,000, parks officials plan to conduct a study on 10 local parks. The initiative includes removing any hazardous trees and planting new ones in areas where they are most needed.

Director Amanda Rogers shared insights into the project, stating, “Over the last several years, this has been a result of storms we’ve had, including ice storms in previous years. We’re starting to really see how these events have hurt many of our trees and affected the health of our tree system. In the last few years, we’ve had to remove multiple trees from several parks, so this initiative we hope will help us plan for 100 trees.”

The effort is expected to take about two years to complete. Officials have already begun the project by conducting tree health assessments and implementing a new GEO software to track tree data across the city. This technology will allow for more efficient monitoring and management of the urban forest.

Key components of the initiative include:

  • Conducting a comprehensive study of 10 local parks to assess tree health and identify areas needing improvement
  • Removing hazardous trees to ensure public safety
  • Planting new trees in locations that require them the most
  • Utilizing advanced software to track and manage tree data

By focusing on these elements, the city aims to create a more resilient and sustainable urban environment. The project not only addresses immediate concerns related to tree health but also lays the foundation for long-term environmental benefits.

Residents can expect to see visible changes as the initiative progresses. The efforts of the parks department reflect a commitment to improving the quality of life for all Owensboro citizens. Through careful planning and implementation, the city is taking significant steps toward a greener future.

The success of this project will depend on continued community support and engagement. Local leaders encourage residents to stay informed about the progress and to participate in any opportunities for involvement. By working together, Owensboro can achieve its goals of a healthier, more vibrant urban landscape.
