Matt Eisenhuth Calls Time on Illustrious Rugby League Career
Veteran forward Matt Eisenhuth has announced his immediate retirement from professional rugby league, bringing a decorated career to a close. The 33-year-old, a respected figure in the sport, has stepped away from the game after a significant tenure with the Penrith Panthers and a prior stint with the Wests Tigers.
Eisenhuth spent five seasons with the Penrith club, featuring in 75 games. While he was a part of the Panthers’ dominant era, which saw them clinch multiple NRL Grand Final victories between 2021 and 2024, he did not feature in any of those premiership-winning sides. Despite this, his impact and value to the team were undeniable, earning him the deep respect of his teammates and coaching staff.
His career began with four seasons at the Wests Tigers, where he honed his skills before making the move to Penrith. Throughout his time in the top grade, Eisenhuth was known for his no-nonsense approach and unwavering work ethic, qualities that endeared him to fans and colleagues alike.
Penrith Panthers chief executive Matt Cameron lauded Eisenhuth’s contributions in a statement released on Thursday afternoon. “He has been an incredibly valued member of our organisation, and it’s been a privilege to watch his transition from a young player into the professional and respected athlete he is today,” Cameron stated. “His work ethic, leadership and commitment to the team helped set the standard for those around him, and he played an important role in the success we’ve enjoyed.”
While a coveted NRL premiership ring eluded him at the highest level, Eisenhuth was instrumental in other significant team successes. He was a key figure in the Panthers’ triumphant NSW Cup and State Championship victories in 2022, showcasing his enduring commitment to winning.
Eisenhuth, who is also the cousin of rugby league legend Paul Gallen, concluded his impressive career by earning a spot in the Australian Prime Minister’s XIII at the end of the previous season. This selection was a fitting recognition of his consistent performances and standing within the game.
Across his career with both the Wests Tigers and the Penrith Panthers, Eisenhuth amassed an impressive 145 first-grade appearances. His retirement marks the end of an era for a player who consistently delivered reliable performances and embodied the spirit of the game.
