Death in Paradise Plot Hole Leaves Viewers Scratching Their Heads
Fans of the beloved BBC crime drama Death in Paradise were left utterly perplexed by what appeared to be a glaring plot hole early in the latest episode. The confusion stemmed not only from the narrative itself but also from a shift in the show’s usual broadcast schedule, with the new installment airing on a Monday instead of its traditional Friday night slot.
The episode in question saw the Saint Marie police force tackling the mysterious murder of a reclusive pensioner. Before delving into the grisly details, the team had participated in a photoshoot designed to boost public confidence in the local constabulary. It was during this seemingly routine event that the seeds of confusion were sown.
Commissioner Selwyn Patterson, played by Don Warrington, expressed his displeasure at the absence of Detective Inspector Mervin Wilson, portrayed by Don Gilet. He demanded an explanation for DI Wilson’s whereabouts. DS Naomi Thomas, stepping in to explain, relayed DI Wilson’s reasoning: “We did try, sir. He said he’s only here short term so didn’t think it was his place. Also, apparently, football is on.”

The Commissioner’s response was sharp and incredulous: “And presumably, the crime rate drops every time his team plays?”
This exchange immediately triggered a wave of bewilderment among viewers watching at home. Taking to social media platform X (formerly Twitter), fans voiced their confusion. One viewer posted, “Mervin says he’s here short term when he’s been here a year already.” Another echoed the sentiment, questioning, “Mervin is still only there short term? Huh?” A third fan simply stated, “That’s news to me!”
The core of the viewers’ confusion lies in the timeline of DI Mervin Wilson’s tenure on Saint Marie. Mervin Wilson made his debut in the 2024 Christmas special, stepping into the role of lead detective as the successor to Ralf Little’s character, DI Neville Parker. He then continued as the main detective for series 14, which aired in 2025. Given that the show has recently progressed into series 15 and has even referenced the year 2026, it would logically follow that DI Wilson has been stationed on the island for a considerable period, far exceeding a “short term” assignment.

Despite the initial confusion, DI Wilson eventually made amends with his colleagues by the end of the episode, joining them for the much-anticipated photo opportunity.
The scheduling anomaly that accompanied the episode’s broadcast also contributed to the disruption for some viewers. The latest installment was aired on BBC One on Monday, February 16th, deviating from its regular Friday primetime slot. This change was made to accommodate the FA Cup match between Chelsea and Hull, which was broadcast the preceding Friday, February 13th.

However, dedicated fans were not entirely left in the lurch. The episode was made available to stream on BBC iPlayer ahead of its terrestrial television airing, ensuring that viewers could still catch up with the Saint Marie police on their usual day if they chose to do so.
Welcoming a New Face to Saint Marie
Beyond the Mervin Wilson timeline kerfuffle, the current series has also introduced a fresh face to the Saint Marie police department. Sergeant Mattie Fletcher joined the team at the commencement of series 15.

The Daily Mail’s Katie Hind exclusively revealed that the BBC had cast up-and-coming actress Catherine Garton, aged 27, in this significant new role. Speaking candidly ahead of the new series, Catherine shared her initial anticipation and subsequent delight with her new role and the stunning filming location.
“I didn’t quite know what to anticipate,” Catherine admitted, “then it exceeded any expectations I could have had. I love the island. Guadeloupe is like a postcard. It’s quite unreal.” She elaborated on the breathtaking scenery, stating, “Every time I walked out I was like ‘this exists, wow!’ It’s absolutely stunning. Everyone’s nice. I love the culture. The food’s great.”
Gushing about her character, Sergeant Mattie Fletcher, Catherine described her as “tenacious.” She further elaborated on the character’s personality: “She’s really fun to play. She’s sassy, but she’s like your big sister who will tell you what’s what, but you can also come to her if you need to.”
Sergeant Mattie Fletcher effectively steps into the shoes previously occupied by Officer Darlene Curtis, played by Ginny Holder. Officer Curtis made her final appearance in the 2025 Christmas special, marking the end of her tenure on the island.
Death in Paradise continues to captivate audiences with its picturesque Caribbean setting, intriguing mysteries, and a charming ensemble cast. The show airs on BBC One and is readily available for streaming on BBC iPlayer.
