Royals Face Captaincy Crossroads as Parag Steps Up, Jadeja Returns
The Rajasthan Royals are navigating a significant shift in their leadership landscape following the departure of Sanju Samson, who has been traded to the Chennai Super Kings. This transition has seen young Riyan Parag elevated to the captaincy, a move that carries considerable weight given Samson’s established presence and impact. Former Chennai Super Kings player Faf du Plessis recently noted the similarities between the Royals’ current situation and Samson’s own journey, highlighting the void left by his departure.

Last season, Samson played as a substitute batter due to a finger injury, with Riyan Parag often taking the reins in his stead. Now, with Samson officially off the roster, Parag has been named captain, and his initial statements underscore the immense respect he holds for his predecessor.
Parag’s Bold Comparison: “Samson is Irreplaceable”
Addressing a Rajasthan Royals event in Jaipur alongside head coach Kumar Sangakkara, Riyan Parag didn’t shy away from acknowledging the monumental task of replacing Sanju Samson. He drew a powerful parallel, likening Samson’s significance to that of cricketing giants Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma.
“We can only try to look for players with the same skills [like Samson] and someone who can fill the hole left by him in the batting order,” Parag stated. “Just like you cannot replace Virat Kohli or Rohit Sharma in any XI, Samson is irreplaceable.”
Despite this candid admission of Samson’s irreplaceable status, Parag exuded confidence in his team’s ability to adapt and thrive. He reflected on the previous season’s ninth-place finish, arguing that the team showed grit and resilience in several close encounters.
“In any 40-over game, there will be a few moments where you have to make right decisions, and that’s what I’ll focus on – like who will bat where, or what to do at the toss – and if we do that well, then this year will be a good one,” he explained, outlining his strategic approach to leadership.
Jadeja’s Homecoming and Spin Wizardry
A significant boost for the Royals comes in the form of Ravindra Jadeja’s return. The experienced all-rounder, a key member of the franchise’s 2008 title-winning squad under Shane Warne, has rejoined the team through the trade window. However, his role is not merely a nostalgic callback; the Royals are keen to integrate his current capabilities into their modern-day strategy.
Riyan Parag highlighted the immense value Jadeja brings, particularly his extensive IPL experience. “The main advantage of having someone like Jadeja is that he has played all the seasons, and that experience he brings will be very useful as we try to win those small moments,” Parag commented. “He is the most experienced IPL player in our squad now. Jadeja had a superb economy [rate] in Chennai all these years, and Jaipur and Guwahati are wickets that are slow and sticky respectively. And we also have Bishnoi.”
The pairing of Jadeja with young leg-spinner Ravi Bishnoi is seen as a major strategic asset. Parag expressed strong optimism about their combined impact.
“The combination of Bishnoi and Jadeja makes us world-class, top class,” he enthused. “I don’t think better combinations are possible than having both of these spinners start for us. The two of them bowling together can help us win from any situation.”
Season Opener Against Former Captain
The Rajasthan Royals are set to commence their IPL 2026 campaign on March 30th. Their opening fixture promises an intriguing narrative as they face the Chennai Super Kings in Guwahati. This match marks Sanju Samson’s first encounter against his former team since his high-profile move, adding an extra layer of anticipation to the season’s debut. The Royals will be looking to make a strong statement from the outset, showcasing their new leadership and the formidable spin attack they now possess.
