Pathirana’s Return Boosts KKR’s IPL 2026 Prospects
The Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) have received a significant shot in the arm with the news that Sri Lankan fast bowler Matheesha Pathirana has been declared fit and ready to participate in the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 season. This development comes as a welcome piece of good news for the franchise, which has been navigating a challenging period marked by several key player injuries.
According to Bandula Dissanayake, the secretary of Sri Lanka Cricket, Pathirana has successfully completed his rehabilitation program and has been officially cleared to feature in the IPL. While this confirmation from the national cricket board is a major hurdle cleared, KKR will still undertake their own assessment of the young pacer’s match readiness before finalising his inclusion in the squad. Pathirana’s fitness had been a concern after he sustained a hamstring injury during Sri Lanka’s T20 World Cup 2026 group stage match against Australia. This unfortunate setback forced him to miss the remainder of the tournament, during which Sri Lanka was ultimately eliminated at the Super 8 stage.
“As far as I know, he is fit, and we have issued him the NOC to play in the IPL. That is all I can confirm right now,” Dissanayake stated, providing a clear endorsement of the bowler’s recovery.
He further elaborated on Pathirana’s condition: “He has finished his rehabilitation and is fully fit. However, it will be up to the franchise to evaluate his readiness. At this time, we don’t have any information on that. As far as we know, he is fit and prepared to join the IPL.”
The exact timeline for Pathirana’s arrival and integration with the KKR squad remains unconfirmed. The team is scheduled to depart for Mumbai on March 25 to prepare for their opening fixture against the Mumbai Indians on March 29. Following this away game, KKR will return to their home ground, Eden Gardens, for a demanding stretch of three consecutive home matches. These encounters will see them face the Sunrisers Hyderabad on April 2, followed by clashes against the Punjab Kings on April 6, and the Lucknow Super Giants on April 9.
The acquisition of Pathirana was a significant investment for KKR in the IPL 2026 auction, with the franchise committing a substantial Rs 18 crore to secure his services. This move was part of their strategic efforts to bolster their bowling attack and improve upon their disappointing eighth-place finish in the 2025 season.
Since making his debut for the Chennai Super Kings in 2022, Pathirana has rapidly carved out a reputation as a potent T20 specialist. Across 32 T20 appearances, he has claimed an impressive 47 wickets. However, his performance in the most recent 2025 season was somewhat below the high standards he had set, registering 13 wickets from 12 matches at an average of 32.62 and an economy rate of 10.14. Despite this dip, his potential remains undeniable, and KKR will be hoping for him to rediscover his best form.
The KKR pace attack has been a point of concern heading into the new season. Beyond Pathirana’s injury scare, Harshit Rana is currently undergoing recovery from a knee ligament injury, and his participation in the tournament is highly unlikely. Furthermore, Bangladeshi pacer Mustafizur Rahman was released by the franchise earlier this year following a directive from the BCCI. To address this gap, KKR brought in Zimbabwean international Blessing Muzarabani as a replacement, adding another international flavour to their pace battery.
