PBKS Overseas Stars Get World Cup Departure Extension

Punjab Kings Face Player Assembly Challenges Ahead of IPL Opener

With the Indian Premier League (IPL) just around the corner, the Punjab Kings camp is still awaiting the full assembly of its squad. Despite commencing preparations in mid-January, several key players, particularly from overseas, are yet to join the team. The squad’s star overseas recruit, Marco Jansen, is not expected to link up with the side until March 28.

Jansen’s delayed arrival is attributed to his recent participation in the 2026 ICC Men’s World Cup with the South African contingent. Upon returning home, he encountered disruptions due to the Middle East airspace crisis, stemming from the ongoing conflict involving the US, Israel, and Iran. Head coach Ricky Ponting, understanding the circumstances, has granted the bowler additional time with his family.

Last season, Marco Jansen proved to be an invaluable asset for the Punjab Kings. He was instrumental in their bowling attack, scalping 16 wickets across 14 matches. His contributions weren’t limited to his bowling prowess; Jansen also proved his mettle with the bat when required. Notably, against the Chennai Super Kings, he smashed a quickfire unbeaten 34 runs while defending a formidable total of 219. However, his season was cut short as he had to depart for his national team commitments, specifically the World Test Championship final.

Overseas Contingent: A Phased Arrival

According to reports, the majority of the overseas players are slated to join the Punjab Kings squad by March 21. Afghanistan’s dynamic all-rounder, Azmatullah Omarzai, is scheduled to arrive on March 23.

The franchise is actively working on making special arrangements for players travelling from the West, given the current operational challenges faced by airports. These efforts are crucial to ensure that all players can join the team as smoothly as possible amidst the logistical hurdles.

Meanwhile, captain Shreyas Iyer, fondly referred to as ‘Sarpanch Sahab’, has confirmed his arrival date, with him set to join the team on March 19.

Reflecting on the 2025 IPL Season: A Near Miss for Punjab Kings

The Punjab Kings had a truly exceptional 2025 IPL campaign, culminating in a runner-up finish. This marked their first appearance in an IPL final since 2014, a testament to their improved performance under the leadership of captain Shreyas Iyer and the guidance of coach Ricky Ponting. The team dominated the league stage, topping the standings with an impressive nine victories.

Shreyas Iyer was a standout performer with the bat, amassing a remarkable 604 runs throughout the season. On the bowling front, Arshdeep Singh was the leading wicket-taker, claiming 21 wickets. The emergence of young talent was also a significant highlight, with Priyansh Arya scoring a memorable century and Shashank Singh proving to be a formidable finisher for the side.

In a nail-biting final against the Royal Challengers Bengaluru, the Punjab Kings fell agonizingly short of lifting the coveted trophy, losing by a mere six runs. Despite a valiant late surge led by Shashank Singh, affectionately known as ‘Chhota Sarpanch’, the team couldn’t quite clinch the victory.
