Pezet Inspires Sensational Eels Comeback Against Broncos
In a thrilling encounter at Suncorp Stadium, the Parramatta Eels staged a remarkable comeback, snatching a 40-32 victory from the jaws of defeat against the Brisbane Broncos. The match, which saw momentum swing wildly, was ultimately decided by the brilliance of Eels playmaker Jonah Pezet, who is set to join the Broncos next season. Pezet was instrumental in his side’s resurgence, orchestrating a stunning turnaround after the defending premiers had surrendered a significant early lead.
The Broncos looked to be in cruise control for much of the first half, establishing a commanding 20-6 advantage by the 31st minute. However, the Eels, fuelled by Pezet’s creative spark, found another gear. They managed to score an astonishing three tries in the space of just five minutes, completely shifting the scoreboard and taking a slender 22-20 lead into the halftime break. This rapid-fire scoring spree laid the foundation for their improbable win.

Jonah Pezet was at the heart of this first-half revival, directly contributing to two of the Eels’ opening tries. His first assist came from a well-placed grubber kick that proved too much for the Broncos’ Payne Haas to handle, allowing Ryley Smith to pounce on the loose ball and score. Shortly after, Pezet delivered a perfectly weighted short ball to the rampaging Kelma Tuilagi, who powered over for his second try of the match. The Eels’ attacking prowess continued to expose Brisbane’s defensive frailties, with Isaiah Iongi slicing through a disjointed left edge defence, highlighting a communication breakdown between Ezra Mam and Gehamat Shibasaki.
Broncos coach Michael Maguire acknowledged his team’s lapse in concentration after building a substantial lead. “We were up by 20 points and then we softened and teams find you out,” he commented. “We had a few issues on the left. We need to be better. We’re not hitting the mark.”
The second half continued in a similar vein of high-octane, albeit at times error-strewn, football. After the break, a rare handling error from Reece Walsh presented an opportunity that the Eels capitalised on. Isaiah Iongi continued his impressive contribution, running a superb line to extend the visitors’ advantage. However, the Broncos refused to lie down. Ezra Mam responded with a deft chip kick behind the defensive line, finding Kotoni Staggs who crossed for his second try of the night, levelling the scores at 26-all in the 48th minute. This period of the game saw defence become almost optional, with both teams trading blows.
Pezet’s Masterclass Seals the Deal
As the match entered its final stages, the Broncos, despite the Eels’ surge, managed to regain a brief lead. A moment of individual brilliance from Reece Walsh saw him execute a freakish chip-and-chase to put the Broncos back in front. However, this lead was to be short-lived, as Pezet’s influence grew. The 23-year-old, who will reportedly succeed the retiring Adam Reynolds at the Broncos in 2027, was instrumental in orchestrating the Eels’ match-winning plays.
With the scores locked at 32-32, Pezet delivered his fifth try assist of the night. He threaded a cunning grubber kick into the in-goal area, which was brilliantly gathered by Sean Russell, who managed to ground the ball for a crucial 34-32 lead.

But Pezet wasn’t finished. In the 79th minute, with the Broncos desperately seeking a final score, he produced a moment of individual brilliance to seal the game. He executed a masterful grubber kick, regathered it himself, and showed composure to dive over the try line, extending the Eels’ lead to 40-32 and effectively ending the contest. This try, coupled with his four previous assists, was the defining moment of the match.
The Broncos’ woes were further compounded when captain Adam Reynolds was forced from the field in the 76th minute with a rib injury, casting a shadow over their performance and their veteran playmaker’s immediate future.
Eels coach Jason Ryles praised his team’s fighting spirit and resilience. “That is our footy club. You play for Parramatta and you fight for every play and contest,” he said, beaming with pride at the comeback win. “We’ve seen that in live action.”
While acknowledging Pezet’s outstanding contribution, Ryles remained measured in his praise. “He is a work in progress and there are areas of his game we want to keep working hard on,” he stated, indicating that the young playmaker still has room for development despite his match-winning heroics.
The Eels’ ability to overcome a significant deficit against a top-tier opponent like the Broncos is a testament to their determination and the emerging leadership of Jonah Pezet, who has clearly signalled his intent to be a significant force in the NRL for years to come. His performance on Thursday night was not just a win for his current club, but a compelling audition for his future employers.
