Misery loves company, and there are not two fanbases more upset with their franchise now in Major League Baseball than the NL East rivals, the Philadelphia Phillies and New York Mets.
Earlier on Sunday, the Mets threw away a late lead to lose to the Chicago Cubs in extra innings, losing their 11th game in a row. In the evening, it was Philadelphia’s turn to make their fans melt down, as they got out to an early 2-0 lead against the Atlanta Braves before eventually losing and getting swept by the rival franchise.
The Phillies, like the Mets, who have one of the most expensive rosters in baseball, are now one of the worst teams in the league to start off the 2026 campaign.
At 8-13, only better than the Mets in the entire National League, Phillies fans are not amused at their current predicament.
“If everyone is still employed by the end of April, fans should boycott this team,” posted an angered fan on social media following the sweep. “They don’t deserve your money or your time, since they thought ‘running it back’ was what you wanted to see.”
“Well done Phils,” posted another fan on X. “Swept at home. 2 runs in first and nothing the rest of the game. Same old [expletive]. Have to add a run here and there. Just don’t learn. So frustrating as a fan.”
“I will always be a Phillies fan until the day that I die,” added another Philadelphia fan at the end of their rope. “However, I just can’t see spending my money to watch this team or buy their merchandise in their current state. This is not in Thomson. This is on DAVE DOMBROWSKI for putting together a flawed lineup with no fundamentals.”
The Phillies will move on to a series with the Cubs starting Monday, who are coming off their own sweep of the aforementioned Mets this weekend.
Fan Reactions Highlight Deep Frustration
The frustration among fans is palpable, with many expressing their disappointment on social media. The sentiment is similar across both fanbases, as both teams struggle to find consistency and success.
- Fans are calling for drastic changes, including the firing of key personnel.
- Some are considering boycotting games and refusing to purchase merchandise.
- A growing number of fans feel that the team’s management has failed to build a competitive roster.
The State of the Phillies and Mets
Both the Phillies and the Mets have invested heavily in their rosters, but the results have been disappointing. The Phillies, despite having one of the highest payrolls in the league, are struggling to keep up with the competition. Their recent loss to the Braves, which came after a strong start, has left fans questioning the team’s ability to perform under pressure.
Similarly, the Mets have faced a string of losses, leading to widespread frustration among their supporters. The team’s inability to secure wins has led to calls for change, with some fans suggesting that the entire front office should be replaced.
Looking Ahead
As the season progresses, both teams will need to address their shortcomings if they hope to improve their standings. The Phillies will face the Cubs in a crucial series, while the Mets will look to bounce back from their losing streak.
For now, however, the focus remains on the struggles of these two franchises and the growing discontent among their fanbases.
