Mikel Arteta’s Position at Arsenal Under Scrutiny
Premier League fans and pundits have been closely watching the performance of Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta, with some questioning whether his tenure at the club is a result of luck rather than skill. Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink, a former Chelsea forward and known cult hero in English football, has voiced his opinion that Arteta is “lucky” to still be in charge of Arsenal despite the team’s strong position in the league this season.
Arteta took over as Arsenal manager in 2019 and has led the club through several challenging seasons. While he has managed to secure one FA Cup title and two Community Shields, the team has come close to winning the Premier League on multiple occasions. This season, however, Arsenal are in a prime position to win their first league title in over 20 years, currently leading Manchester City by nine points with eight games remaining.
Hasselbaink, speaking on Sky Sports before Arsenal’s match against Bournemouth, expressed his thoughts on Arteta’s long tenure at the club. He pointed out that while Arsenal are in a great position, it is worth considering how long Arteta has been in charge and the amount of money spent on transfers over the past two years.
- ‘Arsenal are in a great position at the moment, but let’s not forget how long he’s been there,’ Hasselbaink said. ‘He has won one FA Cup. For a club like Arsenal, is that enough? Yes, they are in a really good position, but let’s look how much he has spent in the last two years – a lot of money. He has got two good squads, the bench is really strong. Should they not be more ahead?’

The focus this season has also been on Arsenal’s style of play, which has often been described as physical and reliant on set pieces for goals. While this approach has led to success, Hasselbaink is not entirely convinced it is the ideal way to win the league.
- ‘You look at the football – they are pragmatic,’ he continued. ‘They are solid, they don’t give a lot away. Yes, that’s how you win the league normally. Would I want to see more the Arsenal way? Yes. With a bit more flair. But that is me, a lover of football. You don’t win leagues all the time like that. I think he has been very lucky to be this long at a club of that stature. They must have believed in him. That doesn’t happen a lot.’
Fan Reactions to Hasselbaink’s Comments
Not all Arsenal fans agreed with Hasselbaink’s assessment. Some took to social media to express their frustration with his comments.
One fan wrote on X: ‘I can see they are gearing up the narratives to use and water down the title win when it’s confirmed. I know this game.’
Another posted: ‘Harsh take. Mikel Arteta built Arsenal into title contenders. That’s not luck, that’s a project paying off.’
A third fan added: ‘He’s made Arsenal a lot of money by getting them into the Champions League and sustaining title challenges consistently. It goes both ways.’
Despite the mixed reactions, the debate around Arteta’s management and the team’s success continues to be a hot topic among fans and analysts alike. Whether it’s luck or skill, one thing is clear – Arsenal are in a strong position to make history this season.
