Qatar’s Support for Somalia Amid Regional Tensions
The Emir of Qatar has reaffirmed Doha’s commitment to supporting Somalia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, following a diplomatic controversy triggered by Israel’s recognition of Somaliland as an independent state. This assurance came after a phone call between Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud and the Emir of Qatar, Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani.
In a statement released on Saturday, the President’s Office highlighted that the two leaders discussed bilateral and regional relations, focusing on opportunities to strengthen cooperation between their countries. The Emir emphasized Qatar’s unwavering support for the Republic of Somalia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
Israel’s Recognition of Somaliland Sparks International Concern
On Friday, Israel made history by becoming the first United Nations member state to recognize Somaliland as a sovereign entity. This decision was announced by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu during a video call with Somaliland President Abdirahman Mohamed Abdilahi.
Netanyahu stated, “Mr President, nice to speak to you. I want you to know that I’m signing now, as we speak, Israel’s official recognition of Somaliland and its right to self-determination.” He added, “Our friendship is seminal and historic, so I’m very, very happy and I’m very proud of this day. I want to wish you and the people of Somaliland the very, very best. I think this would be a great opportunity for expanding our partnership.”
This move followed the signing of a mutual agreement under the Abraham Accords framework, which established full diplomatic relations between Israel and Somaliland, including the opening of embassies and the appointment of ambassadors.
Until Israel’s recognition, Somaliland had remained unrecognized internationally since it declared independence from Somalia in 1991. Despite this, the region functions as a de facto state, with its own government, currency, security forces, and regular elections, and it controls the north-western part of Somalia.
However, the Federal Government of Somalia continues to view Somaliland as part of its territory.
Regional and Continental Reactions
Israel’s decision has drawn criticism from various regional and continental bodies. The African Union expressed concern that the move could have “far-reaching implications for peace and stability across the continent.”
The Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) also condemned the recognition, emphasizing that the Federal Republic of Somalia remains a sovereign IGAD member state whose unity, sovereignty, and territorial integrity are fully recognized under international law.
“Any unilateral recognition runs contrary to the Charter of the United Nations, the Constitutive Act of the African Union, and the Agreement establishing IGAD,” the bloc said. IGAD called on international partners and stakeholders to uphold international law and to support dialogue and processes that strengthen peace, stability, and cooperation in the region.
Commitment to Peace and Stability
The regional bloc further reaffirmed its commitment to inclusive political processes and regional cooperation in support of lasting peace, stability, and prosperity for Somalia and the wider IGAD region.
Ongoing Challenges and Future Outlook
As the situation continues to evolve, the international community remains closely watching how Somalia and its neighbors will navigate these complex geopolitical dynamics. The recognition of Somaliland by Israel has raised questions about the future of regional stability and the role of international law in resolving such disputes.
For now, the emphasis remains on maintaining dialogue and ensuring that all parties involved work together to uphold the principles of sovereignty and territorial integrity. The involvement of key regional players like Qatar underscores the importance of multilateral cooperation in addressing such sensitive issues.
