At the Cultural Centre, Queen Mary and King Frederik were extended a warm welcome by senior Aṉangu representatives, the traditional custodians of this sacred land. Following the ceremony, the royal couple were introduced to Phill Pallas, the regional director of the National Indigenous Training Academy, at the Kulata Academy Cafe. The royal couple’s Australian sojourn, scheduled from March 14 to March 19, promises to be an extensive exploration of the country. Their journey began in Perth on Friday evening, setting the stage for a tour filled with official engagements and opportunities to reconnect with the nation where their love story famously began.
In a social media post shared on Friday night, the couple expressed their immense anticipation for the visit. “On the way! We have been enormously looking forward to the reunion with Australia and the whole country’s population,” the post read, accompanied by the iconic Men at Work anthem “Land Down Under.” They reflected on the significant time that has passed since their initial meeting, adding, “A lot has happened since we met here more than 25 years ago! See you soon, Australia!”
From Sydney to Hobart: A Familiar Path
This royal tour marks their first visit to Australia in 13 years, and it will encompass a diverse range of iconic locations. Following their time in the Red Centre, the itinerary includes a visit to Canberra, where they are slated to meet with the Prime Minister and attend a state dinner held in their honour. The tour will also take them to Melbourne before concluding in Hobart, the very city where Queen Mary spent her formative childhood years.
Accompanying the royal couple will be a significant delegation of 55 Danish businesses, highlighting the economic and diplomatic importance of this state visit.
A Royal Connection Forged in Australia
Mary and Frederik’s bond with Australia is deep-rooted. Their fairytale romance began in Sydney during the 2000 Olympics, where they met at the Ship Inn Hotel. Their wedding in May 2004 solidified their union. The couple has since welcomed four children: Crown Prince Christian, Princess Isabella, and the 15-year-old twins, Prince Vincent and Princess Josephine.
This current visit follows a series of four previous official trips to Australia in 2013, 2011, 2008, and 2005. However, this is their inaugural visit since their coronation as King and Queen in 2024, following the abdication of Queen Margrethe.
