Rachel Lindsay Reacts: Bachelorette Season Pulled

The future of a beloved Australian reality dating franchise is in serious doubt, with former lead Rachel Lindsay declaring the entire brand “tainted” following the abrupt cancellation of a highly anticipated season. The decision by network executives to pull the plug on the upcoming Bachelorette season, starring Taylor Frankie Paul, came just days before its scheduled premiere. This dramatic move was triggered by the leak of a disturbing video depicting Paul’s alleged assault involving her ex-partner, Dakota Mortensen, from 2023, which incited widespread public outcry.

Lindsay, who made history as the first Black woman to helm The Bachelorette in its 13th season, expressed a grim outlook for the franchise’s longevity. Speaking on her podcast, Bachelor Party, she posited that the show’s narrative arc might have reached its inevitable conclusion. “I think it’s over,” Lindsay stated, reflecting on the complex circumstances. “I was trying to think of a scenario where it could be different. Because this isn’t just, ‘Oh, we put it all on a person. This person did this.’ This is the system that allowed this to happen.”

The network has been contacted for comment regarding the unfolding situation.

Lindsay elaborated on her belief that the franchise’s credibility has been irrevocably damaged. “The name Bachelorette, Bachelor is tainted at this point. How do you move forward past that? You can’t.”

Adding to the existing fan scepticism, Lindsay pointed out that Paul’s casting itself had already raised eyebrows. This marked a significant departure from tradition, as The Bachelorette typically selects a lead from among former contestants of The Bachelor. This deviation, Lindsay argued, had already sown seeds of doubt among the show’s loyal audience. “How do you trust this name, Bachelor, Bachelorette, that has meant something to people, moving forward?” she questioned. “You don’t. You already questioned it when you moved Taylor Frankie Paul over. Now it is completely destroyed. Like, why did you guys think this was okay?”

The controversy surrounding Paul’s involvement in The Bachelorette is intrinsically linked to her participation in another reality series, Secret Lives of Mormon Wives. News emerged earlier this week that production on the fifth season of this show, which had brought Paul into the reality TV spotlight in 2024, was put on hold. This pause was attributed to an alleged domestic dispute between Paul and Mortensen that reportedly occurred on February 24th and 25th of this year. Draper City police confirmed that allegations were made by both parties, though no charges have been filed to date. Authorities have declined to provide further details on the incident, citing an ongoing investigation.

Statements and Legal Proceedings

Representatives for Taylor Frankie Paul issued a statement acknowledging the cancellation of The Bachelorette. They expressed gratitude for ABC’s understanding as Paul prioritises her family’s safety and security. The statement further elaborated that after enduring years of “silently suffering extensive mental and physical abuse as well as threats of retaliation,” Paul is now finding the strength to confront her accuser and is taking measures to protect herself and her children from further harm.

Dakota Mortensen subsequently released his own statement, vehemently denying Paul’s allegations. “As anyone who has seen the video will understand, this is a deeply upsetting situation,” he told Entertainment Weekly. “I am, unfortunately, used to these baseless claims about me and our relationship, which I categorically deny. I am focusing on our son and his safety, and hope that Taylor will do the same.”

This is not the first time legal issues have arisen involving Paul and Mortensen. Paul was previously arrested and charged with aggravated assault in 2023 following an altercation that was documented on the first season of Secret Lives of Mormon Wives. In August of that year, she entered a guilty plea to a third-degree felony count of aggravated assault. The remaining charges of criminal mischief and domestic violence against her were subsequently dropped. Paul is currently serving a three-year probation sentence in connection with that case.
