Recalled Supplements Flood Australian Hospitals

Trendy Superfood Supplements Linked to Widespread Salmonella Outbreak

A popular health supplement, promoted for its rich nutrient profile, has been linked to a significant salmonella outbreak affecting almost 100 people across the United States and its territories. The Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has provided updated figures, revealing that 97 individuals have fallen ill and 26 have required hospitalisation. These cases are spread across 32 states, with the contamination potentially stemming from moringa powder.

The initial recalls for two distinct products, “Why Not Natural Pure Organic Moringa Green Superfood” capsules and “Live it Up Super Greens” supplement powders, were issued in late January. Investigations by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and state health departments have identified the presence of salmonella bacteria in ingredient samples and finished products, raising serious concerns about consumer safety.

Details of the Recalled Products and Distribution

The recalled supplements were widely distributed, reaching consumers nationwide, as well as in Puerto Rico, Guam, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Both companies sold their products through their respective websites and various online retailers, including major platforms like Amazon. The “Live it Up Super Greens” products also saw distribution in the United Kingdom. Furthermore, there’s a possibility of “unauthorised third-party distribution” through other online marketplaces such as eBay.com and Walmart.com.

Sales for the “Live it Up Super Greens” products occurred between September 2024 and January 2026. For “Why Not Natural” capsules, sales took place from July 2025 to January 2026. Despite being recalled, the long shelf life of these products means consumers may still have them stored in their homes. Consumers are strongly advised to immediately cease using any of the recalled products and return them to the point of purchase for a refund.

The Scope of the Outbreak

The illnesses linked to these recalls began in August 2025, with the most recent case reported on February 27, 2026. The CDC estimates that the actual number of people affected is likely much higher, as many individuals recover from salmonella without seeking medical attention or undergoing testing.

The age range of the affected individuals spans from two to 81 years old. In interviews with 67 individuals who reported falling ill, a significant majority—59 of them—stated they had consumed a product containing moringa leaf powder. Of these, 55 specifically reported consuming “Live it Up Super Greens,” while three consumed the “Why Not Natural” capsules. One person reported consuming both products.

Scientific Findings and Investigation

The FDA’s laboratory analysis played a crucial role in identifying the source of the contamination. The agency detected one outbreak strain of salmonella in two samples of moringa leaf powder ingredient. Additionally, another outbreak strain was found in one opened product sample of “Why Not Natural Pure Organic Moringa Green Superfood” capsules.

State health departments also contributed to the investigation. The Illinois Department of Public Health and the Wisconsin Department of Health Services each identified the outbreak strain in opened samples of “Live it Up Super Greens.” In Illinois, five people have become sick, while Wisconsin has reported 12 cases. The Minnesota Departments of Agriculture and Health confirmed the presence of the outbreak strain in an unopened “Live it Up-brand Super Greens” product sample, with seven individuals reported ill in that state.

Further tracing by the FDA has revealed a common manufacturer for both brands. This common link strongly suggests that the bacterial contamination originated at this manufacturing facility, although the investigation is still ongoing to confirm the exact point of contamination.

Understanding Salmonella and its Risks

Salmonella is a type of bacteria that can cause mild to moderate gastrointestinal illness. However, it can lead to severe and potentially life-threatening complications, particularly in vulnerable populations such as young children, the elderly, and individuals with compromised immune systems.

Symptoms typically appear within 12 to 72 hours after infection and include diarrhoea, fever, and abdominal cramps. In healthy adults, the infection usually resolves within four to seven days without medical intervention.

In more severe cases, the salmonella bacteria can enter the bloodstream, leading to serious complications like sepsis. Other life-threatening conditions that can arise include aneurysms and endocarditis, which is a dangerous inflammation of the inner lining of the heart. Individuals under the age of five, seniors, and those with weakened immune systems are at a significantly higher risk of experiencing severe infections and developing these critical complications.

What is Moringa Powder?

Moringa powder is derived from the finely ground leaves of the moringa tree, a plant indigenous to India. This plant has earned the moniker “the miracle tree” due to its extensive list of purported health benefits. According to sources like the Cleveland Clinic, moringa powder is packed with nutrients and is believed to support various aspects of health, including bone strength, vision, and weight management. The powder gained considerable popularity in the 2010s, often incorporated into smoothies, juices, or other beverages by health-conscious consumers.
