Rishabh Pant Faces Growing Pressure as Captain of Lucknow Super Giants
Rishabh Pant is under increasing scrutiny as the captain of the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) following another defeat in the IPL 2026 season. The team suffered a narrow loss in a Super Over against the Kolkata Knight Riders, continuing a troubling streak of poor performances this season. LSG was unable to chase a target of 156 runs, marking their fifth consecutive loss. Their home record has been particularly concerning since Pant took over as captain from the previous season, with the team losing eight matches in a row at home.
In total, LSG has lost 14 out of their last 22 games under Pant’s leadership. This lack of consistency has raised questions about his ability to lead the team effectively. Additionally, Pant has not met expectations with his personal performance. In the previous season, he scored 458 runs in 21 innings, managing only three half-centuries. In this match, he contributed 42 runs but failed to secure a win for his team.
Jaffer Calls for a Change in Leadership
Former Indian cricketer Wasim Jaffer has publicly called for a change in the captaincy of LSG. He suggested that Aiden Markram could be a better choice to lead the team. Jaffer expressed his opinion, stating:
“I feel a player like Rishabh Pant should play purely as a player. You get the best out of him when you free him up and tell him to just go out and play and win matches on his own. Don’t burden him with captaincy. I think Aiden Markram is a better captain.”
He added:
“He has led South Africa very successfully, he is mentally strong, very composed, and I think he can get the best out of the other players. But this doesn’t look like something that will actually happen. This is just my suggestion, but if I were there, that’s what I would do.”
Jaffer also shared his thoughts on the team’s combination and suggested a preferred batting order for T20 games, emphasizing Markram’s calm approach as a source of stability.
LSG Struggles Continue
Jaffer did not hold back in his criticism of the team’s overall performance. He stated:
“LSG seems a lost team and don’t have a clear game plan at the moment.”
He continued:
“LSG looks completely out of place right now, it’s hard to even know what to expect from them. If I were in that dugout, the first thing I would do is make Aiden Markram the captain… That would be my top seven, and I would go with this batting order.”
The team’s form has come under intense scrutiny, with their struggles in matches and poor home performance raising concerns as the tournament progresses. Whether a change in captaincy will occur or the management will continue to support Pant remains uncertain. However, the need to get the team back on a winning track is becoming increasingly evident.
