Suncorp Showdown: Roar Eyes Crucial Victory Against Wellington Phoenix
Brisbane Roar are staring down the barrel of a potentially season-defining clash this Saturday at Suncorp Stadium, where they host Wellington Phoenix. With their finals aspirations hanging precariously in the balance, the Roar are desperate to finally overcome the Kiwi outfit after a challenging A-League season. A loss to the Phoenix would not only signal another defeat against their rivals but could also prove to be a catastrophic blow to their top-six ambitions.
Wellington Phoenix have had the Roar’s number this season, and a victory on Saturday would see them complete a clean sweep of the Queenslanders for the 2025-26 campaign. Having already secured wins against Brisbane in October (2-1) and January (3-0), the Phoenix are in a strong position to further solidify their own finals hopes.
The stark reality for Brisbane is that another defeat would see them fall three points behind an out-of-form Phoenix, and extend their own winless streak in the A-League, which has stretched back to mid-January. For coach Michael Valkanis, the urgency is palpable.
“It’s a must-win game for us to be able to achieve what we’ve set out from the very beginning – to finish in the top-six,” Valkanis stated, underscoring the immense pressure on his squad. “We know we’ve been through our ups and downs, and we need to turn that around. To do that, we need to create opportunities and score goals.”
The Goal Drought: A Lingering Concern
The Roar’s struggles in front of goal have been a persistent issue throughout the season. With a meagre tally of just 21 goals in 21 matches, they share the unenviable distinction of the joint lowest offensive output in the league with Melbourne City, who have played one fewer game.

“That’s what’s been holding us back a little bit – just putting the ball in the back of the net,” Valkanis admitted, acknowledging the critical nature of their attacking woes. “It’s not something you can just work on in one or two days, and hopefully it happens. It’s a little bit of confidence, it’s a little bit of believing, and just creating as many chances as possible to score goals.”
A “Cup Final” Atmosphere
Phoenix coach Chris Greenacre echoed the sentiment of high stakes, describing the upcoming fixture as a “Cup final.” He understands the significant damage a defeat would inflict on either team’s campaign, highlighting the competitive nature of the league this season.
“Every team has lacked consistency – we’re all in that similar boat,” Greenacre observed. “The team that becomes the most consistent will get their rewards at the end of the season.”
Celebrating a Milestone: Hore’s 100th Appearance
Adding an extra layer of motivation for the Brisbane Roar is the impending 100th appearance for attacking weapon Henry Hore in all competitions. The club will be eager to mark this significant milestone with a victory, providing a much-needed boost for the team and their loyal supporters.
Coach Valkanis spoke highly of Hore’s contribution and character, emphasising his importance to the squad’s morale. “He’s level-headed, and really always humble with the way he goes about his football,” Valkanis said of Hore. “Whether he’s winning or going through difficult moments, he’s the same, and that’s really important around the group.”
The Roar will be looking to harness this personal milestone and their desperate need for points to spark a turnaround against a formidable Wellington Phoenix side, in what promises to be a tense and pivotal encounter at Suncorp Stadium. The outcome of this match could very well shape the remainder of their season.
