Robbie Keane Snaps, Ditches Interview Over Spurs Speculation

Keane’s Cryptic Response to Spurs Managerial Speculation

Former Tottenham Hotspur talisman Robbie Keane has offered a curt and technical response when questioned about the vacant managerial position at his old stomping ground, before abruptly exiting a press conference. The current boss of Hungarian club Ferencvaros is reportedly not keen on an interim role with the North London club, despite his name being tossed around by Tottenham’s hierarchy.

During a post-match interview on the sidelines following his side’s dominant 4-0 victory in the Hungarian Cup on Wednesday evening, Keane was directly asked about the possibility of an invitation from Tottenham to take the helm. His reaction was far from enthusiastic.

Keane, 45, offered a dismissive shrug and a sharp retort, stating, “I can’t help speculation,” before bringing the interview to an immediate close and walking away. It’s understood that the Irishman would only consider a return to Spurs for a permanent managerial gig, rather than a temporary “seat-warming” position.

Keane has been at the helm of the Hungarian outfit since January of last year. At the time of writing, he is considered the fourth favourite for the Tottenham job, with odds of 11/2. The intense speculation surrounding the next permanent manager for Spurs comes after the club’s decision to part ways with Thomas Frank earlier this week, following a disappointing home defeat against Newcastle.

While Keane is still relatively early in his coaching career, he has amassed a wealth of experience across the globe. His initial foray into management was as a player-manager for ATK in India. Following this, he transitioned to an assistant role with his national team, the Republic of Ireland. He then moved to Middlesbrough as an assistant before taking up a similar position at Leeds United. Keane eventually stepped up to become the head coach of Maccabi Tel Aviv, leading them to a league title in his sole season with the club before choosing to move on.

He has seemingly carried that winning momentum into his current role with Ferencvaros, who are currently leading their domestic title race.

In his illustrious playing career, Keane was a prolific striker, featuring in over 200 matches across two separate spells with Tottenham. He found the back of the net an impressive 91 times for the club, cementing his status as a fan favourite.

The current frontrunner in the betting market for the Tottenham manager’s role is former Marseille boss Roberto de Zerbi, who recently departed the French club after a significant 5-0 defeat at the hands of PSG. John Heitinga, appointed as assistant last month, is listed as the second favourite, with Mauricio Pochettino trailing behind him, and Keane occupying the fourth spot.

Tottenham are currently enduring a challenging season, languishing in 16th place in the league and finding themselves embroiled in a battle against relegation. However, the incoming manager will at least have the opportunity to lead the team into the knockout stages of the Champions League, having successfully progressed from their group.
